Oops-bought an old shitter- collective thoughts required please .

Sorted !
Took bike to workshop and they said they’d have to stick in a heli coil .
Booked in for next week .

Got home and seemed to recall I had a tap and die set so rummaged around and found it . Then went to local chandlery and got some slightly longer bolts

Ta
Nice one arsey; it's always satisfying being the man that can; :beerjug: (y)

Out for a spin and the Sargent seat is very firm but comfortable. Bloody tall now though as on tip toe both sides

Might have a go at cleaning the header pipes. What’s best to use ?

Take them off, take them to a metal polisher, they will make them look like new. Spend the time you would have spent cleaning them, enjoying yourself.

Game changer 😜😜

I've found that the original acid based Wonder Wheels is excellent on stainless downpipes. Brush on, wait 5 mins and wash off, job done. They don't come up polished, but they do come up clean.

Apparently, Harpic bog cleaner and a toothbrush does the job too, who knew?

New Sargeant seat is very comfy . It’s also bloody wide and I’m now on tip toe.
Went out for a ride and noticed the left fork seal is leaking .

Pile of old shit . Might be for sale soon 🤔😜

  • Wow
Reactions: Doc
Fork seals almost look doable

Think I’ll give it a bash.
I’m ordering the bits from Motorworks.

The guy in the video ‘uses a socket ‘ to fully seat the seals.

I see Motorworks do a special tool but bit loath to buy it as will probably never use it again if I can manage without .

IMG_3751.jpeg

But saw this on Amazon . It seems as though the seal has internal diameter of 35 mm and external 48mm, so would this not work at half the price ?

IMG_3756.jpeg

Apart from the above tool, am I missing anything ? (I’ll obviously do both forks and do the seals and dust seals at same time

Cheap home made fork seal driver, costs a couple of quid to make :

Length of plastic waste pipe (about 38 or 40mm diameter) and a large jubilee clip.

Cut a 6 and 5 inch length of the pipe from the tube. Slit them both lengthways. Put the 5 inch slit tube over the fork tube above the new seal followed by the 6 inch on top of it so it overlaps, then fit the jubilee clip over the outside and tighten firmly.

Slide the tube up and down so the outer (projecting) plastic tube hammers the seal home on its outer edge without touching its inner edge (seal lip). Undo jubilee clip and remove, then fit the dust seal and repeat.

If I was at home instead of away I’d take a photo and attach it.

Ta, but think I’m sorted as a mate who’s a mechanic thinks he has one I can borrow.
I’ve ordered the bits from Motorworks and will have a crack at it in a week or so when I’m back from Japan.
What could possibly go wrong ? 😜

New fork seals, dust seals,o rings and fork oil fitted .
The left dust guard was well fucked

Took me a tad longer than planned as had to source a 22mm spanner and a long 5mm Allen head to remove the drain plugs that were very tight .

Nice to be able to do another job I never thought I could . Off to test ride it to see what I’ve fucked up 😜
