Oops!!

If you are fitting a Helicoil (others may be different), you need a hole that is 23/32nds".

However, drill bits tend to produce oversize holes that are not circular. You may do better with a reamer.

If you go to this thread on a landrover site, you can download a ZEUS book in a pdf format.

Great thing to have giving you all the drill sizes you need and tapping sizes. Something most engineers will know about and will have used.

Banjo, if you are not sure you have the skill set needed to fit a helicoil (not particuly difficult for a craftsman or even reasonable DIYer, but still skills are needed) why dont uoy take her apart, buy the bits you need and look for a freind with the skills, or any small machine shop or skilled fitters shop. I'm sure it wouldn't be that expensive, its a 15 minute job in the right hands.

If its only leaking a few drops over night ...get the sump plug out ( somehow ) and use plumbers tape on the thread of the sump plug until you can afford to repair properly...

The drain plug is M14 x 1.5...As stated if you don't have the suitable Helicoil kit and are unsure on the procedure to install it... get someone who knows to do it.
Believe me where this is isn't like fitting one on the bench...it's easy to F**k it up

while i frequently use a torque wrench, i never use them for drain plugs.

they often seem to end up too tight to me :nenau

Absolutely! We have more than our fair share of Torque Wrench Meisters on this forum. Very dangerous if you haven't learned to "feel" your way when fitting and tightening fasteners.

I'm certainly in the camp that does NOT torque anything except critical engine and brake fasteners.

I recently popped the wheels off a new VW Golf and was surprised to find the handbook said 120 Nm for the wheel bolts. That's fxxxxxx tight in comparison with a wheel wrench. Don't ever fit a wheel bolt with one of them telescoping wheel wrenches. Save it for getting them off. Hand tight, 2 grunts is enough :)
