operating system upgrade

Though why on earth you'd want to use either is beyond me.

The main reason I use Windows is because all my stuff is home made and frequently fiddled with, and that's not practical with Apple stuff, which is also substantially overpriced in my opinion. Nothing wrong with it, but I can get better value for my pound with PCs running Windows or Linux. Most of the people I do work for use Windows servers, although Linux is making inroads into the small business sector too. Apple kit is very nice from the user perspective mind, quite tempted to get a Macbook for playing around with.

Openoffice is better than MS Office by virtue of being free, but there's nothing substantial wrong with MS Office, even Mac users use it.

Back at the original question, I put Windows 7 Home on an old NEC laptop today, 2.4GHz pentium, 640MB RAM and 27GB space on the disk, with a very plain display card. Not quick, a lot of page file goings on, but useable for basic stuff like browsing. I'm going to get some more RAM for it, see how that performs, but overall better than I expected.

I am surprised that win 7 actually went on that machine and it didnt halt the install when it did a hardware check.

So was I, it seems to be running in a more basic mode than it does on my main pc, but I wonder if it might not be faster than XP. It selected a standard VGA adaptor for the display, so no aero malarkey, but that's not really essential.

I run Windows 7 on my iMAC as there are a couple of programs I use regularly that are not available on a Mac and there are no Mac programs I can use instead. Otherwise I would never use Windows again.

Mac Snow Leopard £25.00. Microsoft Windows 7 UPGRADE £69.00.

When I bought my iMAC it seemed expensive but looking at the spec it is cheaper than many flat screen all in one PCs from HP, Sony, etc. and they do not have the fantastic 27 inch 2560 X 1440 screen, 1 terrabyte of HD, 4 Gbyte RAM, Hi Speed Firewire and the ability to boot in about 20 seconds and run most software as quick as clicking the link. Also it looks good enough to keep in the living room. In fact we do and it makes a very attractive digital TV with built in recording for the extra cost of £50 for a USB dongle.

Windows 7 on my iMAC and laptop work well but doesn't come close to the speed and ease of use of my iMAC

It's the hardware that is pricey, they can afford to sell the o/s cheap from the hardware profits. You can buy fancy screens for PCs as well, and a late model PC running windows 7 starts from sleep mode, which is what I suspect the iMac also does, in a very few seconds.
