I've been using an Optimate 3 on my GS for the last 3 years and I've had no trouble with bzatteries, bike or charger so don't really know why you would need a canbus friendly one (Except of course to put the price up)

No, it comes with a lead which you can permanently fit somewhere convenient.

My Optimate is almost 10 years old and still charges my GS effectively. No issues to report with it connected permanently to the battery and charging through a fused lead.

I bought a new Optimate at the Excel Show....I thought it was a 3....but found out it was a 4, making it a bargain at the price I paid!

But now there's a new 4?......are there two versions of the 4 or did I pick up a right bargain?? I bought mine over two months ago..so hardly 'new' as in just released.

Not that it matters....cos I always connect it direct to the battery anyway.

I just got one and it doesn't work. The bike shuts down the accessory socket after around 30 seconds and once that happens, no charking.

See, its all billhooks. Just connect any Optimate with their supplied lead direct to your battery and all will be well.
It'll soon be the battery killing season

Turns out it came supplied with standard mode selected. Thanks to advice from some of the forum members, I changed modes and it now does what it says on't tin.
