Hi folks,

I'm new to the GS (Adventure) and have what is hopefully a simple (dumb) newbie question......:o

I currently have an Optimate II from a previous bike, and would like to know whether this can be used (safely) with the BMW R1150GS Adventure's standard battery.

Also if it can, does it have to be directly wired to the bike, or can the bike be charged via the GS's standard accessory sockets? If this is so is there an adaptor available to allow this connectivity.

Thanks in advance.

I have an Optimate II that I put an accessory socket plug onto (center +ve, if my memory serves - got the plug and info from Jeffries BMW, but the plugs are also available elesewhere and the polarity via a multimeter...).

I've been plugging it into my GS (new last september - I think it has a Gell battery) through the winter without suffering flat battery (despite alarm) or any other noticable problems.

Thanks for the update, the optimate II has been used on my old bike (ducati) for 4 years & it's fantastic - just need to know that I'm not going to blow up the GS......... (ever seen an acid battery explode) ;)

There should be an adaptor with the optimate, comes as standard.

Yep, you can plug straight into the accessory socket.

Yep, get a gell battery, Hawker make them, available from Motorworks, bought one two years ago, now have redundant Optimate.

Yep, welcome to UKGSER. You'll have the type of your life:thumb
