Could someone tell me if an Optimate will be of use to a new GS or is the BMW charger required. Thanks.

Fine as long as you fit an accessory socket direct to the battery or use the direct connectors supplied with the Optimate. The OEM accessory socket is on the Canbus which will shut down and won't allow the battery to receive charge. With a direct to battery connection it's all fine.

Mines been on and off the opti from day 1 and 4 years on I'm still on the original OEM battery, had a flat one day after a few weeks off charge, but thats all.
No, don't use the Optimtate.
The BMW Charger provides "BMW Dynamic Electrons" for a better, greener cranking experience. You may invalidate your warranty by using generic aftermarket electrons.
I did however use Heisenburgs uncertainty principle to get a new battery on warranty.

The Optimate will work just fine - use the Otimate flylead to connect straight to the battery terminals.

Had the BMW charger for mine but it was a pain in the arse - with turning on/off or whatever the procedure was to get the bike to charge, flogged it and wired an optimate direct to battery with absolutely no problems

Actually, it's easy peasy :
The BMW charger works just fine on the accessory socket.
Other chargers don't communicate with onboard electronics, so connect them directly to battery.
One warning : with ALL chargers : if battery is dead (= dashboard doesn't light up) : disconnect battery from bike, then connect charger directly to battery. Reason : charger may try to revive battery with high currents/amps, and this may destroy onboard electronics.
See ? Easy peasy.

If the bike's not even switched on it's not going to be drawing any current is it? It's stuff like this that becomes 'lore' and you get people saying 'well I read it on UKGSER so it must be true!'

Don't worry, be happy.
I had my GS hooked up to an Optimate for the four and a half years I owned it. The bike was sold last November with the original battery still in fine fettle.

alternative charger - Halfords own brand bike battery charger
Does anyone know if this charger were wired straight to the battery, if it would affect any of the wiring / software on the '07 1200GS ?
