Im heading to Oradour-sur-Glane and was hoping to travel from Vire to there and back some way in 1 day,

Has any of you done this kind of route?

Also its my 1st time heading out of Normandy any tips?

Lastly can i just find a patch of grass to camp on for the night?

stayed about 5 miles from here last year but dont remember the name of the municipal camp site but check out www.archiescampings.eu and you will find all campsites in the area,u can download 30000 campsites in europe into your sat nav from this website and u will never b stuck no matter where u are in europe.

Hi Mark, Orodour-sur-Glane is definitely worth a visit, but as for riding from Vire and back in a day........

Well it's do-able, (most things are), but I couldn't really advise it. You could do it with a very early start and a very late finish, but there are some lovely roads down there and plenty of nice places to visit, so why rush?

1000km round trip in a day? Lot of boring autoroute, or a much longer, slower trip. Its possible, but not recommended. You're looking down the thick end of 11+ hrs riding without stops.

If you're not used to riding abroad (and you post suggests you may not be), I'd take a day there and a day back.

No you can't just pitch your tent on any old patch of green you find, but its not hard to find a farmer who will let you camp 'sauvage'

There is a great bikers B&B called motobreaks, just a kick in the arse up the road. If you google them you'll get there web sight. They're really hard to beat.
Also look at 'Trip To Chris 2010' in the travel section.

It's a hellava long trip as said by others.

We went there last year as we were staying nearby.

It's worth seeing if you're local but not worth travelling such a distance.

It is very moving though and the graveyard especially.

Twice now I've camped at Vendome for a nearby microlight Fly-in at Blois - and was within about 100 miles of Oradour - but couldn't stir my arse to make the effort to visit it - needless to say, I now regret that decision.

(a) Look at a map. Your start and end points are (near enough) in a straight line but 380 km apart. So that is 760 km, let's say 10 hours minimum for the return journey.

It can of course be done but what time do you get up and want to go to bed?

(b) Camping? Why do you need it if you are going to do a return jaunt? If you want to camp, get a Michelin camping guide or something similar and find something that suits you.

(c) It's your first time out of Normandy but, I guess, not out of Andover. The rest of France (and the globe) is just the same..... only further away. What is 100 miles away in the UK or Normandy is no closer (or far) in Provence or Outer Mongolia.

Oradour Sur glane is not a 2 minute visit, I've spent 7 hours in the martyr Village and still not seen it all....
Wobblyboxes have a exceptionally good free Aire....

Plus 1. I would agree 100% with Proff. Not a visit to rush. Take your time and appreciate what happened.

I may be stating the obvious to some but there are open and closing times as i found out once. I would agree take your time a lot to see there and i would pull in Samour Tank museum on the way back.

Proff has it, It takes a day and more to properly do O-s-G, there's a wealth of photos, films etc to see before you go to the ruins.

Worth visiting the information centre and watching some of the films shot at the time.

Wild camping is OK but not that easy to do in reality. Do not light any fires - this is the law from April to October every year but especially important this year. If anyone sees you with a match you'll probably get nicked for arson!

It is if you have it one your list of '200 things to see in France before you die', along with the Millau bridge, a gorge or two and the route Napoleon.... Quite why anyone really wantsto go there is another matter entirely.

Gawping is the usual one, followed by a tick in the box and some ernest statement as to how awful it must have been.....No shit, Sherlock; what were you expecting, exactly? No doubt accompanied by some fatuous comment that they heard no birds singing. That they had not heard any birds singing for the past three or more days had probably escaped them or they had not bothered to listen.

We've visited Oradour sur Glane and been in this cafe as well.
Didn't know about the chip butties though.

If you want some sort of a perspective on what happened at O sur G, read Das Reich by Max Hastings before you visit.

Mark, as said it is a hell of a ride in one day and with so much to see at Oradour you will be very rushed to take it all in.

Also to do it in one hit you will miss out on riding some decent roads as you will have to stick to the main ones to crack the mileage off.

What about getting to Oradour then coming back up to say Poitier and just staying at a hotel like a formula 1? Is there a reason you have to do the journey in a day?
