Oradour sur glane

I also recommend a visit, there are some cheap hotels in the nearest big town (can't remember the name). Formula 1 type places.

I to plan to visit Oradour sur glane on the bike in April but am looking for somewhere to stay a little further north (Le Mans).

The city centre mercure hotel is good if you're planning any time in Le Mans. Secure parking and easy access to the cathedral and old town. If you're just passing through then the premiere classe Ouest Universite is cheap and cheerful and has a secure car park.

I stayed in a Logis Hotel in the 'new' town square, it was acceptable and had good food and was very cheap. It didn't have an 8 foot razer wire fenced off bike park, but you're in a village in France so parking in square felt safe enough to me.

Don't expect them to speak perfect English to you though.

+1 for Riders Rest. Was there in September of this year.

Tony and Wendy are great hosts and I can certainty recommend Riders Rest if you passing that way.

Wow, thanks for all the replies folks and info on places to stay.
Will deffo be going to see for myself.

It is only as I have gotten older that my interest in these things has increased and the more I study the more I am shocked and astounded by mans inhumanity to man.
but these kind of places need to be kept for us to visit to remind us of how bad it gets!

Definitely a place to visit. Go early in the morning.
The visitors centre have a secure room for your gear
so you don't have to lug it about and they don't charge.

Stayed at Moto Breaks up the road from it. Very very good.

Another +1 for Riders Rest, stayed there in may, this year, great accomodation,
and Wendy and Tony are great hosts.

Oradour is well worth a visit, it's not a pleasant place to go to but I think it's one of those places that everyone should visit if they come to this part of France.

If you do go there do the whole visitor centre thing and not just the village.

I've been there about 8 times this year with different guests staying at our place, I do a bit of a tourguide thing as we're only about 25 minutes away (I don't charge for this rideout as long as somone buys me a coffee) and it affects different poeple in different ways.

Oradour is well worth a visit in my opinion they have an official website at

http://translate.google.com/transla...r-sur-Glane&hl=en&lr=&rls=com.microsoft:en-US

Or in French http://www.oradour-souviens-toi.fr/

Which gives most of the detail. Tulle is a little further south which is where the same Nazi Regiment hung 99 inhabitants trying to find the Marquis attackers of the stores depot there on the 9th June the day before they levelled Oradour to the ground. Interestingly the Marquie came from Treigmac, Chamberet and Eymoutier.

Egletons was also a base which saw SAS action when a free French detachment of the SAS were sent to disrupt the MSR NR89 from Clermont to Brive. A recent newspaper recorded the death of one of the heroes http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obituaries/9778923/Count-Jacques-le-Bel-de-Penguilly.html

There were also 2 concentration camps in the region Mt Garagon and Nedde here in the Correze.

Plus a very good resistance museum at Peyrat Le Chateau... I could go on...

Don't just come to the area just to see Oradour check out www.ridersrest.eu/rides.aspx for some great days riding... I have all the rides routed here is Oradour for example www.ridersrest.eu/routes/OradourDirect.pdf

One thing many people don't know is that if you ask at the reception at Oradour they have a secure cloakroom where you can leave your lids and gear should you fancy stripping to shorts and Tshirt whilst you walk round.

NB Many thanks for the excellent reference for Www.ridersrest.eu

If anyone is going to Oradour take a bottle of Sarsons Vinegar to the PMU Café at the top of the new town, Ben (Tall African Gent) will take care of you ;) he cannot get any on France and needs it for his UK customers who obviously put it on their chip Butties ;)

If you're browsing Google Maps and want to know the coordinates of a location, just right-click on the map and select What's here?. The coordinates will automatically pop up in the search box. ;)
