I've been looking at a nice 2005 GS 1150 Adventure that has a large amount of engine oil on the lower part of the engine and resting in the bash plate. It's difficult to see where it's coming from but I hope it's maybe the oil pipe that's fractured and nothing more serious. Interestingly on and below the right hand cylinder on what I assume is the timing chain housing it looks like orange gasket sealant has been used. Is this factory sealed or as the engine been apart ? It's only done about 12k mies from new and just seems a little strange. I've looked on my standard GS 1150 and all I can see is a paper gasket, no sign of any orange sealant.
Anyone know how the factory ?

The factory sealant is a transparent, whitish gooy made by Drei-bond.

The only orange colored sealant I know off is made by General Electric, a high-temp rtv used in aviation.

So changes are the bike has been apart for some reason.

Paul.

Thanks Paul.

The strange thing is its only on the right hand cylinder where it meets the engine case as best as I can tell. It's also on the timing change block underneath that also meets the engine case. This coupled with the excess oil underneath makes me think its been apart, but why on a 12k miles 1150 I wonder ?
The owner is having BMW look at the oil leak and to ask if its been to bits to try and see where we are at with the motor. Seems unusual on such a low miles and otherwise nice bike. :nenau

Just to add the only gasket sealant I've seen that bright orange is Hermitite. I may be wrong though.

I thought I had knackered up my lamda sensor when I used a "non sensor safe" sealant..That was orange, cheap shit from the local pound shop..
I redone the job with proper sensor safe silicon and all is well..

Would the orange sealant indicate a DIY rebuild on one side of the engine at least ?

My GS had opaque/whitish sealant squidged out at points around both barrels where they meet the crank case. Took for granted it must have been apart at some point but because it runs so well i didn't really care. But based on this maybe it is from the factory build after all.

As for the mystery oil leak. Maybe check the oil sight glass. When i bought mine it was leaking and making a mess of the belly pan exactly as you describe. A few quid and 10min work it was sorted (which is advisable as i later read stories of them popping out with the obvious consequences :D). I think they can weep and make a mess without really being obvious.

Good luck

i had a oil leak that put oil in bash plate and it was the ally washers rotted through on the oil pipe banjo union when i took them out not much left i just found some copper ones in the workshop love a free fix me :thumb2
