Gents,
I did an 'upgrade' of the wife's old 2011 Quad i7 MBP and it now runs red hot, especially when using the Safari web browser, and chews through the battery in no time with fans blazing.

I've downloaded mavericks in preparation for a reinstall. Gonna back up all data and photos etc then possibly try to delete Sierra and install Mavericks unless anyone knows a fix for the issues Im having ??

many thanks

I would guess Spotlight indexing your files - lots of data on your machine? Sierra has a different indexing routine so has tor ebuild file indexes.

Also Photos under Sierra - does a full reindex of pictures which can take hours.

You can disable the spotlight to see if this is the issue. (if you keep stopping it - closing laptop lid etc then it will take what seems like forever).

Ive got a 2015 Macbook pro 128ssd.

Since upgrading to Sierra I have noticed the battery life has reduced and I now hear the fan for the first time.

My machine has a max of 150 gb of files since I have only been using it during the last 6 months. So if its indexing thats a concern.

The main benefit I find from Sierra is the ability to manage memory a bit like on Windows DOH !

You can set Spotlight to not index, if you wish.

Sys Prefs
Spotlight
Privacy
Use the + button to include drives or folders to exclude.

Thanks, I did let it run overnight twice doing its indexing in both mine and the wifes user profiles, to little avail. The processor still gets red hot and the fan still blazes when using Safari. I have flushed the browsing history which has improved things a lot, since restarting it seems a lot less hot and goes for 10 minutes until the heat becomes a problem, there are no Safari browser add-on extensions enabled.

I've looked at Spotlight and everything is unchecked already, maybe thats why it isn't getting as hot this time around.

Many thanks.

There's something in Safari that gets mucked up. Google it. Mine did that. If you go into Activity Monitor you can kill something that is making the CPU run hot.

Best to look it up first. Now I remember, it was something to do with the Bank Security software Trustee Rappor, which does stuff. I deleted it and have had no problems since.

Couple of comments - I am running a 13" ret MBP with no issues.

However

I never use safari - use chrome with no issues.

Also I happened to notice a safari update wanted to apply today - so maybe there is a fix to your issue in there.

If not maybe give chrome or firefox a try?

I think I now have it sussed, it was a memory leak causing by the SECD process to use about 99% CPU. I found a workaround on the apple discussion forums.

These are the steps I followed:

Open a Finder window
Click "Go" on the menubar
Hold down the Option key and the Library folder will appear
Click on the Library folder and look for the Keychain folder within the Finder window
Drag the folder into the trash but do not empty the trash
Restart your computer
Keychain will be reset; there is still no need to empty the trash

This fixed the problem for me at least for the short term. Hopefully it keeps things going smoothly from now on.

Thanks to everyone for the help and advice. :thumb2
