check the firewire port by going to the apple logo at top left of screen - about this mac - more info - system report. I think you have a firewire 800 port and the cradle has a firewire 400 port. If so, buy an adapter like this one which allows you to connect a fw 400 device to a fw 800 port.

Sorry for butting in in this thread but your making an easy process complicated. Have a look at this web page, it will give you instructions on how to create a bootable usb drive of mountain lion from which you can use to format your new ssd to mac os extended (journaled) format and then do a clean install of mountain lion. After which you use time machine to restore all your apps and files. Hope this makes things easier for you.

All done - many thanks. I used Super Duper, which cost me about £20 and have kept the 320Gb hard drive as a remote drive in the housing I bought. Boot up time is remarkably short now - and all other functions also seem quicker. I now have 480Gb SSD and have removed another moving part from the computer (thereby probably lengthening its usable life) - all in cost just under £300...

I had the opportunity to do a time-machine restore thru migration-assistant to get my Mrs.' work back onto a new mac over the weekend. While it works, it's also really slow. Add in installing the OS first on the new drive, and the hoops you need to jump thru to do that online. I'd stick with cloning.

Now just remember to actually take backups while at home, and install trim-enabler for 3rd party SSD, or eventually the write speed will go down when the disk doesn't know what's in use and free for re-use.
