I had the opportunity to do a time-machine restore thru migration-assistant to get my Mrs.' work back onto a new mac over the weekend. While it works, it's also really slow. Add in installing the OS first on the new drive, and the hoops you need to jump thru to do that online. I'd stick with cloning.
Now just remember to actually take backups while at home, and install trim-enabler for 3rd party SSD, or eventually the write speed will go down when the disk doesn't know what's in use and free for re-use.
