In the closing stages of our mesmeric tour of Ireland ( here ) I started to experience difficulty changing from 4th to 3rd. Stiff gear lever and a nasty clunk as it changed into 3rd.

Sometimes it would stick in 4th and needed a de-clutch and a second attempt with a decent bit of effort to get it into 3rd.

It gradually got worse to the point where, by Swindon (pouring rain, dark, cold, iPod battery exhausted) all down changes were horrible and required the clutch to be in, the revs blipped to the right level before the lever would engage the requested gear.

I dropped it straight into Vines the following day (last Saturday). Darren was superb - has asked the usual "how can I help" and I said "please can I have a new gearbox". Phil the technician took the bike for a ride and pronounced it "very nasty", and it was booked in for a warranty job immediately.

Vines service quality really is superb these days - cant fault it. Spencer and Darren are both excellent. And this was on a busy Saturday morning with some odd motorcycle rally going on outside.

Anyway, a new gearbox was prescribed, ordered, and arrived on Wednesday and is currently being fitted. They haven't disassembled the other one, they are just sending it back to BMW for diagnosis.

The bike has done 14k miles now and was just serviced at 12k by Vines before going to Ireland (during which they changed the gearbox oil). I bought it in May 2004 so its quite an early one.

Now, I'm a pretty smooth rider, and very mechanically sympathetic. I dont do clutchless up-changes or anything like that, or put undue stress on the bike. I'm rather surprised that the gearbox has broken, as any of us would be.

Vines said that this is the first gearbox that they have done. I'm sure this is correct as it was the parts chap, Anton, who I know pretty well, who does all the ordering who told me.

I know a couple of other people have had similar problems with gearboxes.

I have to say that I really love my 1200 but this has dented my faith a bit. Say I only did 5k miles a year - the bike would have been well out of warranty at 14k. I'm now in the "what will happen next" camp, whereas previously I had supreme confidence in the bike. I've resorted to checking for rear wheel play regularly, and am quite concerned about the brakes too although I've never had a problem with them.

Top marks to Vines for doing exactly the right thing though, sharing my concern and sorting it out quickly and efficiently.

I'll keep you posted if/when I get any more info about the cause of the problem.

Any idea of the cost of a new gearbox?

How much is it to extend the warranty again ? :(

Bout 6 hundred quid now I'm told  And I hope it's now a damn site better than when I took out a BWM extended waranty - a year ago for 300 quid - which excluded just about everything except the engine & gearbox

I know your comment was jocular bit if you do decide to buy one (& I probably would if I had a 1200) CHECK what it covers first & get it in writing. I asked verbally & was told "same as new bike warranty except for corrosion & shocks over 30k miles - b****cks

Cheers for that.

Crikey 600 quid, oh well its cheaper than changing the bike and If I do keep it when the original 2 year warranty expires in September 2006 I WILL be extending the warranty. I would just like to say that although I've only done 300 miles on the bike, so far it has not put a foot wrong. Touch wood.

Sorry about the hijack Tobers

I will not pay for a warranty

I had a new 'box at 1100 odd miles due to a gearbox selection problem which became stuck in first within minutes of the initial difficulty.

If it, or any other major failure happens after the warranty expires I will consider if it is reasonable and if not I will ask BM to cover it . That would fall within the legal requirements in the UK.

And if I thought it a wear and tear issue I would do the investigation and repair myself.

But I would not replace a complete 'box for a simple selector fault when some parts would do the job.

I wonder if Tobers will get a report back on the failure. I am still waiting since February.

Howard the head BMW chappie was in Vines on Friday with the service guys - hopefully he'll have got an update from them. Anton (parts man) promised to update me when they get the report back from BMW, so we'll see.....

Warranty work

Although I've not had any problems with my gearbox I have had to have some unexpected warranty work done on mine (Now done some 8000 miles).

On my way back from Portugal at Easter the gear indicator started to play up and the instruments started "Sticking". Their operation can only be compared to the second hand on my analogue watch.

CW were excellent and replaced both items under warranty without quibble but like you Tobers it has affected my confidence in the bike somewhat.

Anyone else had a similar problem to me? Again I see myself as fairly mechanically sympathetic though I have tried clutchless changing once or twice only to be told off by Tim at SPC at high volume in front of all and sundry. Strangely enough I don't take it to SPC anymore...

I too have had a new gearbox replaced under warranty (jumping out of second gear and worn bearing) . 10,000 miles. Not only that but a new drive shaft at the same time. Took 2 days to fit so God knows what labour charges would be on top. Work done by Rydales Cardiff and they also replaced the rear disk on warranty. Front crank seal also replaced but still leaking so they are negotiating with BMW to replace the engine now as it appears the shaft is worn. Half a new bike in ten thou!!!!

Tobers,

sorry to hear about the gear box, hope its sorted now. great write up:D my luck continued the next day the No plate fell of my new LWB Shogun, and on Tuesday I found that it had a slight oil leak:rolleyes: :D :D :hapybnce:

Hey ho is that 3 now:P

Mutley aka Lucky:eek:

well somebody always has to buy the first models, so us more sensible (and poorer) people can buy the later sorted ones!

Many thanks for your generocity!

No problem - I quite like being a development mule for you lot.

Anyway, Vines have a technician scarcity problem at the moment. The bike is being done tomorrow I hope. The gearbox is a 9-hour job (!).
