I re-loaded windows and everything is fine..except one minor niggle with Outlook Express. Since re-loading windows, I find that if I'm online but don't use Outlook express, then I decide to use it and send an email...it won't send the email unless I close my Orange (Freeserve) broadband and log on again..and then it works perfectly !

Any ideas how to set up the Outlook so that it doesn't 'time itself out' ( or however you want to describe it?)

Hope all that makes sense !!!

In OE look in Tools>Options and have a look through the various tabs, particularly Send, Connection and Security to ensure that you have the right options checked or unchecked as appropriate.

Normally, when you first logon to your mail server, a recieve is done before a send.

The (pop3) receive, logs you in with your userid and password. The (smtp) send, uses the gateway opened by the pop3 receive. It does not supply uid/pw (default logon action).
This gateway is left open for 20 mins by default and then it closes. In order to initiate another send after 20 mins, you need to perform a recieive to re-open the gateway.

That's why you set your send/receive retry time to less that 20 mins, or whatever your mail hoster specifies.
