Question from Reyno, who's having lots of computer problems again....

he wants to re-format to remove said gremlins, but wishes to save E-Mails concerning his oil cooler grills so he doesnt lose track of orders etc..


can anyone suggest an easy way of exporting the emails so he does'nt lose them when he wipes the computer?

up to now the only thing i can think of is to individually e-mail all his messages to me, and i can then send em all back when he's sorted it ( sounds a bit labour intensive given the number of orders he's had) otherwise copying and pasting to word individually and putting them on a disk..

There's got to be a simpler way... Cheers Bryn

Do a search for .dbx files & save them. When the new rebuilt computer is ready import them from the file menu in Outlook Express

As an addendum to Simon's comment. The reimport can be awkward particularly depending on what medium you save the dbx files to.

Once the new computer is set up the most foolproof way of reinstalling the messages is:

1. Find out where the computer is storing OE messages. From within OE, use Tools - Options - Maintenance and click the store folder to find out. (Might be a good opprotunity to move it to somewhere more sensible than Microsoft's default obscure location). Close OE.

2. Copy the dbx file to the location. In Windows Explorer, right click Properties on the dbx file and check Read Only is NOT ticked.

3. Delete the folders.dbx file

4. Restart OE and all should appear.

Honest its easier than it sounds and is a far more reliable method than the OE Import routine.

what about setting another email adress up forward all the emails to that address get your new computer down load messages

Isn't Outlook Express web based these days, If so, reformatting you puter will not lose you e-mails, because the e-mails are on the web not in the computer, unless they have been downloaded. If they have, resend them to his e-mail address as attachments if necessary

I downloaded a utility that extracts the files from my PC which can then be saved to a backup device. I use a USB memory stick but you could burn them to a CD or send them to a web-based email account such as Gmail.

The utility can restore your OE settings and emails from the backups.

Set up hotmail account and send them to yourself, no fear of loosing anything then.

A Hotmail account is fine so long as there isn't too much to send. I couldn't use that solution as I have about 1.6Gb in stored emails.
