output voltage?

should the voltage at the battery be stable if the revs are kept fairly constant? ive just fitted a second hand bmw voltmeter and its all over the place over about 3.5 thousand revs? checking with a digi tester it seems to vary between 14v and 14.9v, with steady revs. cheers folks.

IIRC the police spec regulator gives out 14.5v, the lower one is 13.6v.

My bike is fairly stable and I don't recall ever seeing over 14.5v.

I'd guess a real 14.9v will boil the battery fairly quickly.

The digital tester will have the effect of smoothing the reading as the display cant respond fast enough to the variations.

Try using an analogue multimeter and see if that dances as well. Don't sit it on the bike so that you eliminate vibration as a cause of error.

Should also have said connect directly to the rectifier terminals to eliminate corrossion problems with the old girl.

Think the culprit's there "BMW Voltmeter". They're cr*p at the best of time's. Very little damping in 'em. Throw it and buy a decient one.
