Has anyone tried oven cleaner on airhead alloy?

Be careful
Most oven cleaners are either caustic based or hydrochloric and that's not good on ally. Turns it black and very difficult to get back. Try to find something containing phosphoric acid as although it darkens the ally it can be scrubbed silver with a stainless steel brush.

Good point 
Glad I asked before buggering something up.
I remember now an ally kitchen tool going thru the dishwasher -came out black as a dog's guts
I have some phosphoric in the shed -something to do with swimming pools - I'll give it a go and post the results -good or bad

I was advised to use a genuine brass wire brush for alloy and it seems to have worked.

Stainless steel pot scourers work OK too, with a bit extra scouring powder.
There is a special scourer for Stainless Steel which removes the discoloring without having to remove too much of the surface, and it brings alloy up well too.
