Sorry for all of the questions but I'm making myself paranoid just before I go on my travel and was just curious with peoples views.

I did an oil change on my 1100gs yesterday and accidently overfilled it by about 100-150ml. Should I drain it out or let nature take its course so to speak.

Thanks in advance for your replys :)

Forget it, it's not even worth worrying about

Any excess will be lost out into the airbox, if at all

Shouldn't worry... I once had my bike back from a dealer with over 1/2 litre extra... Sort of a 2/4 stroke if emissions were anything to go by... They tend to burn down to half way up the sight glass so let it go down a bit and leave it unless it drops further...

Back on 10-40 now are we all...

:D

In 2014...........15/50W from Castrol is the official BMW recommendation for all 1150's

I remember when they were being sold new, they recommended 10/40W

Obviously the engine has changed a lot in 10 years:blast

10-40 Castrol GPS in 2002... the last time I sent much time in the Oilhead section it was all 20-50 talk...:augie Mind that was a year or three ago...:D

I ran my last GS on 10-40 due to it not heating up quickly enough up here in 60N... Sub Arctic you know...:D

I'll have to get my donkey tail and blindfold out for the next bit of Oilhead ownership...:D

So why do BMW keep changing their minds on oil spec from 10/40 to 20/50 & now to 15/50

Boils my piss

...because they are in cahoots with castrol.

In fairness, 20w50 is pretty hard to get in the correct grade these days.

10-40 is probably fine for the UK but in north America when the temperatures were close to 40ºC the oil light on my 1150 was flickering at tickover in a traffic jam with the oil temperature strip nudging max. 15-50 would have been better for that.

I can't see the oil temperature light on mine when it gets that hot! smokes drifts out of the fairing from all sorts of places (and thats top of the RID and 37C so 40C would be extinguisher time :p)

It is hard to get hold of but Rock Oil still do a 'standard' semi synth 20w50 of the right grade 'Strata' - their old 'Guardian' has now been repackaged (and repriced) as a premium motorcycle oil (apparently after it became popular on this forum... )
