All the rest is theory and conjecture....I think what we need to hear is some actual experiences of (slightly) oversized tyre use![]()
Firstly, and I'm referring to road/track tyres here, an oversize rear reduces contact patch due to the distortion of the tyre and again I have no idea about the offroad alternatives.
I raced in the Norasport Open Supermoto race series (midfield runner in the 'B' group) riding a 650 Husaberg. Originally, and in common with many other riders, I started off using the standard rear rim (4.25" using a 16 or 160 width rear tyre) for my wets as a cheaper alternative than splashing out on an additional set of wheels with a wider rear rim (5") I eventually made the change and the improvement in grip was significant. The 4.25" rim is designed for a 150 tyre and the 5" a 160.
These are my own personal experiences and others may have differing views and I also accept that these were in race conditions which are not the same as road use. However and in my opinion it backs up my views regarding getting the best grip out of the right tyre on the right rim.
