Pacific North West National Parks and Yellowstone September 2014

After as excellent stop and BBQ at Crater lake (no pics from me as I was chief chef again) the day started a bit murky and a great cafe and breakfast was soon on the menu. Love them or loathe them, our colonial cousins know how to do a proper brekkie. I had a mans breakfast of eggs over medium, ham, sour dough bread and pancaked whereas Paul went fore the ladies option of pancakes and cream:eek:

Anyway, fully fuelled we headed south to Lassen to be greeted by lovely roads and beautiful weather.

Whne we got to Lassen National Park, the road through was closed by a landslide so we had to find a route round. I fancied this little 10 mile dirt road but Jo on her KTM correctly decided not to do it as it go a lot worse than the pictures show. The road route we took was magnificent and the sun shone beautifully.

We entered Lassen at the southern entrance and were treated to some fantastic views of this lovely national park before the cloud cover obscured the view. We were up at around 9000ft so it got a bit chilly as well but well worth the effort and the roads as usual made for great riding. Lassen has to be one of the most underrated national park in the USA.

So we come to the last day on the road which is always sad but it brought some more great roads and fantastic riding. No matter where you are in the USA, you can find some magnificent roads. As is my usual, I saw a great short cut but after 2 miles it turned to a dirt road which would be great an a 640 KTM but a tad on the tough side for fully loaded bikes. We stopped at a very strange cafe called scooters in the mountains where I think the menu consisted of reefers and then more reefers! We rode back across to santa Rosa via a cafe on Clearlake where we had probably the perfect milkshake and hot dog which is the perfect American lunch. Most people dropped their bikes off and back to the hotel in a massive hailstorm! California are in a drought and I like to think we managed to drum up this massive deluge as a thank you for another brilliant trip stateside.

Most people flew home on Saturday but me Jo and Peter rented a rag top Mustang and went to the Calistoga half mile circuit to watch the AMA Flat Track which I have to tell you is brilliant. Watching grids of up to 18 x 750 Harleys, Yamaha's etc flat trackers flying round for 10 laps is brilliant and pure Americana!!

I loaded the bikes at Santa Rosa on the Tuesday before heading home.

I have to say that I've been thinking about and planning this trip for a good few years and I think it worked out about perfectly. The riding is excellent no matter what level you are, it's great for pillions as the mileage is sensible, the scenery is fantastic and changes every day and we go to those places which are out of the way and give you a real sense of what the USA and Canada is like. We were very lucky with the weather and as usual, the Americans and Canadians we met were to a man and woman friendly, generous and would go out of their way to help us and not at all like a lot of people who haven't been there think.

The group, although quite large at 12 bikes and 18 people in total, gelled beautifully and made a great trip even better so a huge thanks from me to everyone who came, enjoyed and "got" what the trip was about and made it easy for me. Here's to the next one........:thumby:

Got to say I've been reading this and really enjoyed how the trip has unfolded/developed....I'm now saving to get myself on this, or at least one of your trips Chris.....well done to all :D

Great thread, looked fantastic. Credit to Sgt Bilko this would be no easy task to plan and manage this trip. Maybe he could do this for a living :D:D :bow

I've been back for a week now so time enough to reflect on the trip from a distance, so to speak.

It really was the trip of a lifetime for me. I saw places I would NEVER have thought about visiting and have memories that will live with me forever.
As Chris has alluded to we were extremely lucky to have travelled with such a great crowd of folks. I don't really 'do' people but would happily go away for another 3 weeks with just about any/all of these guys again, without a moment's hesitation.

If you are thinking about going on one of Bilco's trips and have the slightest opportunity then I would urge you to do it. We can all find reasons not to do things but life's too short to miss out on opportunities like this; you just never know what's waiting for you around the corner.

Great write up Chris and pleased that the everybody has had a fantastic time, this trip is on my list also:beerjug:

Another big :thumby: to Chris and everyone on the trip, it was indeed 'the holiday of a lifetime'. I suspect slightly different from Bilko's normal fayre as with the exception of one lone annoying single bloke:D it was couples, which added another dynamic to this sort of trip (yes Peter/Andrew, you were a couple:thumb2). I'm not a fan of the 'peloton' approach to touring, preferring to go at my own pace, the framework of Bilko's tours enables you to do this whilst still providing a safety handrail and my wife appreciated the company of others in the evening so she didn't have to listen to me droning on!

Would I do it again? Difficult one that, of course if I had unlimited funds I'd be there now, but I don't, and I don't do the lottery so unlikely to ever have. I haven't accurately worked out the cost but it was over £6k which is a lot of dosh for me and would pay for several European tours so it's more down to justifying the cost which for now (might change my mind:D) I don't think I could do again. Was it worth doing? Bloody right and money well spent, an itch scratched that started in the 70's after watching EasyRider.

Some extra-curricular activities;

Battle of the Little Big Horn. The last view Custer Had (obviously visitor centre wasn't there!

Virginia City (Think Ian McShanes 'Deadwood'), preserved gold rush town and one time capital of Montana. Andrew recruits a team to rob the bank to pay for another camera

Does my Bum look big on this horse? Girls go off riding in Waterton, bikes get a decent run without carting 10 tons of kit on them:bounce1

Um......if I save enough to do one of Chris's trips, I could be the annoying single bloke on the trip; nope, it's not possible for me to be annoying to others in any way, shape or form.....;)

Saving has commenced......:D

twas a great trip - well worth it in my humble opinion

As one of the "funboy 3" - or "queens" 0- take your pick :D (singles in a shared room as opposed to couples in a shared room), I hadn't met anyone bar Chris & Jo before other than the pre-trip chilli at ABW...
Great routes, loads of flexibility on Chris' plan - good motels at reasonable prices... What's not to like when you throw in the roads and views he organised for us... Even the snow behaved and stayed away :)

Not sure how I missed this report. Looks fantastic, and one day, I hope to join you on one of these epic US trips.:thumb
