Plymouth ferry on 21st May and I don't fancy the early start to get there now I am further north. Last time I stayed in Saltash which is a dump. What's Paignton like on a Tuesday in Mid May outside school holidays?
I have used some Expedia reward cash to pay for a room in the Palace Hotel on 20 May, which is offering rooms cheaper than a Travelodge and includes breakfast. There's a Nepalese restaurant, Gurkha, that gets good reviews which I might try.
Any locals fancy buying me a beer?

It’s not the nicest place in S Devon but better than Torquay, I’m in Exmouth about 20 miles away but unfortunately I’m in Greece that week or would have gladly bought you beer, don’t know about the restaurants as never eaten there except on bike nights(Wednesdays) but several bars along the seafront.
I thought Paignton was the last stop before the Care Home.

We rather enjoyed this place, near Totnes ......... https://durantarms.co.uk/
Thats Sidmouth & Budliegh Salterton, Paignton & Torquay are suburbs of Manchester & Birmingham.

It will give me some nostalgia of working in the badlands of Gloucester.
I can always stay in the hotel's gated community as they have a set menu at coach tour prices

You could try the Dartmoor Halfway, near Bickington Newton Abbot
It’s out in the countryside-but decent rooms/lodges and evening food
5 mins or less to A38 at Ashburton and 45 mins to ferry port

A night to early for Riviera bike nights but Teignmouth bike night is along the coast a little. Are you on your bike, we're only 20 minutes away if we're at home.

£130 and does not include breakfast. No thanks.

Yes, on the bike. Ferry to Santander following afternoon, hence being an hour from the port is fine, plus the rate is a lot less than Plymouth & Dartmoor, where I imagine the hotels price gouge a night before a ferry departs. Bonus that my Expedia rewards covers the cost.
