I noticed a paint chip on the left hand side of the tank:

Stone chip I thought. Unusual but better get it fixed.

Then as I parked up I noticed that it was wear coming from the left hand switchgear rubbing on the paint when on the side stand:

This is an April 3013 bike. Out of original warranty but extended warranty was purchased.

So self-inflicted by the bike not me! So advice please:
a) best way to fix the paint?
b) best way to stop it happening?

It's got to go in for a service at the dealers in the next couple of weeks. Any guess at their cost if there is no help from BMW? (Bahnstormer in Maidenhead).

Thanks

The best way to stop it happening is to either adjust the switch or the bars

Warranty or even Extended Warranty won't cover it

No part of the bars or switches should ever touch any part of the bike. Maybe it is possible to adjust the position of the switch and/or adjust the bars - as has been suggested the dealer should offer to do this as it is clearly their fault and was not thoroughly checked on fitting. ;)

Serious? Or joking?
What is the fail point?
Restricted steering. I don't think it would fail in most places if it is just lightly touching.

Out of curiosity is the other side as close? Just wondering if the bar has taken a bend at some point in the past.

True, handlebars can't touch any part of the bodywork or nothing can foul the lockstops

A few years ago my GS failed, because 1 of the Baglux harness straps was fouling the lockstops on full lock

I had to remove the Baglux, so the bike could pass the MOT

Misaligned frame or headstock.?

I was going to say exactly the same, my march 2013 had the above issue, the twats at the BMW factory welded the steering stop in the wrong place.

Is suggest you turn the bars left to right and check clearance .

My issue cost BMW ££££.

Thanks for the comments.

Never been dropped or banged - some hopefully not the headstock or alignment. The left & right full lock positions seem the same. Maybe marginally more on the left.

The left hand switch module was replaced under warranty in Feb last year (left turn and cruise control were faulty). My guess is that the mirror/clutch mount & riding light switch were loosened & moved to do this and not moved back.

There is a 9mm gap between the switch gear and mirror mount, so the mirror mount could be moved. I would do it myself but I think I'll leave it for a discussion when I take it in.

I checked mine last night. Same switch i.e. the aux switch that replaces the rear part of the mirror bracket and there is a good inch of clearance. Yours was clearly fitted badly.

I have the same fog lamp same switch set-up, so I've just checked mine and there is plenty of clearance, about 15mm, nothing anywhere near to catching the tank. It might something as simple as your handlebars being too low down at the bar ends, if so just loosen the bar clamps in lift them up a bit at the rear.

When you look at the bar mounting clamp caps you should be able to see the mounting adjustment markers that show you rougly where to be. You do have some tollerence of movement.

Good luck.
