I am on my third Beemer, started with an F650 Funduro 2 1/2 years ago, then intermittently had an R850R and since October have a W reg 1150GS. All three in their own rights great bikes, am very happy with the service I've had from both my Bristol based dealer and the various fora I subsribe(d) to, and am more than happy with the reliability of the bikes.
Something that puzzles me is the difference in finish - the 1995 Funduro lost a lot of paint on the engine casings (after 30k miles, but already started this when I bought it with 8k miles on the clock), the R850R, bought at 3k miles and sold at 16k miles didn't show a sign of peeling paint, and the GS, bought at 26k miles and now just under 30k miles, has bubbling paint in a few places.
All three bikes have been/are ridden on a daily basis, to and from work, washed down weekly and sprayed liberally with WD 40.
So, any idea whether this is just down to the R850 being the exception to the rule? Or may BMW have seen the light in the late 90s (when my R850 was produced), and then lost the plot again
