Painting a Spring?

I'm gonna get a new spring for my GS but I don't like the purple it comes in. :blast It would look totally wrong on my bike so what paint do I need to use? :nenau I want it to last and not crack after 5 mins too. :rolleyes:
 
No idea, but I have seen black neoprene 'socks' that go over springs.....keeps them clean, de-gritted and i guess would hide your unwanted purpleness :nenau

Probably a lot cheaper and less hassle than having it painted too :thumb2

EDIT.....goes up the outside of the whole thing, like a 5 inch wide tube IYSWIM, not wrapped around the coils :)
 
airbrush a wishing well onto the bike...:eek: next you'll be greasing your crack, shaving your nuts and combing your hair....

Have it powder coated. :thumb2

Won't the paint just crack straight off with powder coating? Funny thing is though, I collected a wheel from my local powder coaters on my way home tonight! :rolleyes:

It certainly didn't when I worked for a company that built shocks years ago.
 
is it a hyperpro spring?
because i think you can buy them in black as well as purple
 
Almost any rattle-can paint will stay on well as long as the spring is well cleaned and given a good rubbing (Ooh er Mrs!) with a bit of scotchbrite...

I wouldn't have it powder coated because the extended high heat and fast cooling might change the tempering....
 
I sprayed a WP shock spring with Plasti-Kote (b&q). Stayed on for years.

If you want an industrial coating, Id go for low temperature plastic coating or electroplating.

I used to be responsible for maintaining various kinds of metal finishing plant and equipment including powder coat, electroplating Etc. and I can say from personal experience of repairing and re-tempering steel components that have become brittle and broken due to the powder coating process that it's not worth the risk in my opinion...

The fact that certain grades are flexible enough not to crack doesn't mean that your spring won't suffer from the high heat cycle...

Many coil springs are PCd as part of the manufacturing process.
