Well I think this just about sums up perfectly whats wrong with this completely fecked up country. No-one wants to take responsibility for their own actions anymore and looks for something or someone to blame - just like measuring the height of paving stone if you fall down and looking to sue; instead of realising it helps to look where your going. :D:D

Washing motorcycle

Make sure that the motorcycle is washed frequently, especially during the winter months.
To remove road salt, clean the motorcycle with cold water immediately after every trip.

Aluminium parts

Clean aluminium parts with a suitable cleaning agent; these cleaning agents are available from your authorised BMW Motorrad dealer. Use plenty of water and BMW shampoo to clean aluminium parts exposed to road salt.

Pages 130 and 131 of the Rider's Manual R1200GS Adventure.

....seems clear enough. Even allowing for a bit of BuMW sales potential, flogging their in-house branded jollup.

LOL its amazing how many people will pay thousands for a GS And not read the manual
Maybe the first "STICKY" Thread in the I'm new here section should be READ THE FECKIN MANUAL!.....................................:augie

You've no idea just how much I agree with you !!!!!

FFS! Just get out and ride the thing, my bike is covered in road grime right now and no doubt will pick some more up tomorrow. I thought the whole point of a GS was to go looking for adventures not worry about minor imperfections in the finish, hell if I was that concerned I would stop filtering, in fact I would stop riding.

I do sympathise with people who expect the bikes to remain all shiny and nice but we are talking about new bikes here, euro and environmental legislation means that all the nasty things that used to be used to stop such issues have long since been banned.

As said before in in this thread spray with Lacquer, £4.00 per can, some masking tape, job done. If it works for the Alloy wheels on your car it will work on your Panniers.

as said before. if you don't key it, it will fall off, and you can't key it 'cos it will look terrible.
it also really needs an etch primer which is a no no for the same reason.

you might have noticed, even OEM lacquered ally normally fails.

alloy car wheels are usually painted, not lacquered IME.

Hi cookie

I stay in the North of Scotland, Great roads but salt untill June. I have just lacquered my top box and will proceed with paniers this week. I have not keyed or primed just cleaned. The finish looks great and I will test out and report back. The product used was a clear Lacquer by "Silver Hook chemicals"
