Having had a look at how close my lovely new Remus zorst is to my standard black plastic pannier on my 03 Adv. I quite fancy a heatsheild arrangement to save charred smalls etc... I'd read on a previous post that an RT? heatsheild is avail as a standard BWM part.... Q1)is this just sticky-backed tinfoil? or a 'proper job' and if so whats the likley cost....
Q2) if it is just sticky backed tinfoil, is it the sort of thing available in all good haflords etc etc or even would the stuff you get for behind house radiators do? anyone know??

Thanks as always for the info

Its actually sticky-backed gauze/wadding with a nice shiny foil topping, about £9 and I've no doubt that the same can be bought/made for pennies. But the latter won't mean you can go back to the BM* dealer and claim a new pannier/zorst should it fail to do its job. ;)

Try an Off road dealer...............like Off Road Only in Wales...........they sell Aluminium sticky tape for plastics and I use it on BMW Plastic Panniers

Caution.

Yep i said it ,,cos you are lookin at a man who knows.
I charred the lot on the exhaust side.Tent ,sleepin bag etc.
Forget about those poxy heatshields ,and organise urself
a piece of pipe as an extension from the exhaust ,on the
touratech lines ,they have a wee extension in the kit to
fit their panniers. It does not look to hot ,,pardon the pun!.
But it works.

I tried some of the ally foil and it got a hole on the first run out, so I've made a plate from a biscuit tin, and used no nails to attach, works at the moment but it may go rusty.

I'm going to make heat shields for all my panniers now, as everyone seems to be toasting the inside of the boxes. I still can't understand how it's happening, some people have the problem, and others don't. Bike, exhaust, chipped and tuned seem to have nothing to do with it. I've had identical bikes/set ups with my panniers on, one was fine, the other was trying to melt the ally. Bugger knows:confused: If any of you find out, do let me know

Chandlers sell some good stuff for sticking aropund marine engine bays and drive tunnels.........has to be good to protect ply and G/Fibre from 24 hour running......

I fitted the genuine Beemer bit yesterday as I was a bit concerned that the new Remus just about cleared the pannier by half an inch. The guy in the Parts Dept had the decency to look vaguely guilty in asking for nine quid for a 6"x4" bit of wadding with some tinfoil attached.

Nonetheless, it definitely does the biz. I went for a 40 mile each way run today and everything was nice and cool inside the box when I stopped. Thinking that the problem might arise when actually stopped, I hung about for 10 minutes to see if there was any heat transfer when static, but everything was hunky dory and the beer and sarnies were fine.

The self-adhesive bit went on OK but I ran a bead of Evo-Stik around the edge 'cos it looked as if it might fray after a bit. Seems to be glass-fibre wadding in the middle? It works, anyway.

I bought some of this expensive padding, but when I did a search on this site for melting panniers, the pictures showed the damage on a corner where the pad would be ineffective. I took the pad back and got a refund.

No problems yet with melting panniers although I did get sparks on one occasion from the Remus Revolution can (see my thread in the Technical section).

Heat shield on Vern's panniers

I had a bit of trouble with my Panniers getting a bit hot. (Vern's 'Worldbeaters) I've got Remus and Y piece, and it does sit very close to the pannier, and the exit pipe does point at the side of the box. I had lined my boxes though, so nothing actually got burned.... just nice and warm.

I've now made a deflector out of 4mm aluminium and screwed it to the pannier mounting frame, and this works perfectly!

(I'll post a picture later)

This of course would not work with standard BMW panniers, as they don't have the substantial Vern frame to work with.

If you look back at all the past threads about Remus (and other) aftermarket exhausts, there are loads of mentions of the different angles at which Remus's fit... some go on easily, and some are a nightmare. Some sit nice and straight, some sit at strange angles..... That , I assume is the reason that Vern has had a similar mix of feedback?

Anyway, my solution for the Vern's users works very well, but I'm sure the man himself will produce a vastly superior and better executed product!!!!

not to use nails, wouldn't look right with six inch nail's sticking thru your panniers........

Nasa heatshield

This is my version of a the NASA heat shield.... proved a bit heavy, and we never actually got above clould level, but at least our space rations weren't fried!!!!

Only suitable for Vern's inter galactic panniers of course!!

Melted WMB pannier!

Rode back from Plymouth yesterday, to find this.

Anyone know WTF happened, or do "they all do that, sir"?

The melt hole is about 6 inches back from the end of the exhaust can.

Dam.......never saw the second picture sorry! which clealy shows the OE can.

I have the Remus y-piece afitted and OE can, I did just over 600 miles last weekend without any melting problems?

However, I have now fitted the self adhesive heatshield that every rants about just in case. The problem is that the area that is effected by the hot gases is right on the corner of the pannier, an area that cannot be covered by the heat shield!

Its all to do with the exit angle of the of the exhaust pipe, I would suggest that you undo the exhaust mounting bolt and the exhaust clamp. Then try to rotate the can inwards more.
