I have just gotten some Wolfman panniers, but no frames as yet. Is there any frames out there that when fitted you dont lose the pillion grab rails?

SW Mocheck QD pannier frames, we have these on our F650. The two rectangular hollow section side frames have fixing kits to suit a good variety of Paniers. The good thing about these is by undoing 4 half turn connectors the side frame can be removed leaving the unobtrusive mounting lugs on the bike. The std grab rail is replaced with one almost identical but with a set of mounting lugs attached.

Did you spring for these Bansk ? How'd they go with the Wolfmans panniers ? I like the look of the Wolfman myself but the lack of grab rail is an off-putter as I do a lot of riding with the missus on the back and may tour with her on there too.

If you have got them, a photo or two would be really appreciated !

Haven't got them as yet. The other problem is that i have an altrider plate and a lot of racks wont fit with this on.

http://www.motohaus.com/acatalog/SW_Motech_BMW_Quick_Lock_Evo-Carrier.html....i have these with the wolfmanns no problem..i have a vario base plate on the top...the locating straps for the woflmann just need a bar to wrap round to work..so you place them where you see fit on the rail of the rack.......if page doesnt load its sw motech racks for 800gs(quick release 4 mount points per side

if you check the pic..the black bar to each side of the pillion area of the seat is fine for a grab rail...

Aha !! Knew I'd seen something somewhere. I have settings to do not subscribe or notify so i don't get bombarded with tut e-mails and so lost this one.

Exactly what I needed.

Thanks Very much !

ps...the adaptor kits with the motechs(extra ££) are for solid boxes, the plain frames are ideal for the wolfmanns to sit against.....

Sooty, a dumb (?) question:
1: I presume these will fit my 800 as the bikes are identical ? Ask as the 800 isn't mentioned as such.

If it's yes to the above, I think I'll spring for these now :bounce1

Cheers,
Dave

Well, the SW Motech pannier racks turned up from Chainspeed a few days ago.

When I went to fit them, the slightly higher position of the new pillion grab rail piece means you can't put the seat back on !! You are given new bolts and 2 x 10mm spacers and these then get in the way of the plastic pads that are supposed to slide onto the round rubber pads.

Here's a few photos:
First shows the original set-up

Second the SW Motech set-up. You can see it sits higher:

Lastly the clash between the plastic seat pieces and the raised bolts preventing the plastic sitting on the round pads.

I rang Chainspeed and they said they were too busy to look into it this side of Christmas. I did send them an e-mail with the same three photos to illustrate my problem.

If anyone has had a similar experience and gotten around it, please let me know.

Cheers, Dave

I have just fitted the Motech system and encountered the same issue, though I have managed to press my seat down. I intend to machine the spacers down until they are the correct thickness , prob need to come down to 7 or 8mm thick, at a guess.

Other than that i think they're great set-up.

Metal Mule racks also fit whilst retaining the grab handles.

I've also got a metal plate on the back, which I use to support the givi rack...

I had that problem when i first fitted the rack.If you push down on the seat hard and shove back at the same time it will go on.A bit of WD40 on the plastic hooks helps. After doing this a few times it gets easier as the plastic seat hooks wear a bit.

Thanks for the info guys. I kinda assumed the spacers were too thick and thought Motech may have corrected it or at least known about it.

Rather than grind down the original pieces I'll see if I can get son stainless washers or a smaller spacer to do the job.

Now I know it can be corrected, on to the wiring mod'.

Merry christmas you helpful bunch :thumb2

Done and dusted

Spent an hour and a half today fitting the pannier racks. Reckon, now that I know what I'm doing, I could do it next time in 30 minutes.

Took a bit of muscling to get the rack to fit together but I got it there in the end. Didn't have to extend the indicators as I have the LED ones and they already sit back enough.

Ground 1-2mm off the 10mm spacers and the seat now fits on. Not as easily as the original but easy enough.

Then packed the panniers out and fitted them too. VERY, very nice indeed :)

The only mod' I think I'll need to make is to off-set the plastic buckles that go over the seat as they fit in the middle of the seat and this makes carrying a pillion impossible. Who would want to sit on a large plastic fastex buckle ?
So I'll cut the straps and replace them with new ones and have one buckle offset to each side of the seat. Also, if you have one male and one female buckle on each pannier (they come with two males on one and two females on the other...) then you can clip the two straps on each pannier together and carry either or both as shoulder bags. Suprised Wolfman didn't do all of that as standard ...... :nenau

Photos to follow maybe ........

Are you sure the spacers aren't there so that the buckle can go under the seat?
