Pannier safe loading weight

For what it's worth I have moved house on my GS and GSA, requiring me to load the bike up to (and possibly beyond :rob) it's weight limits.

On the GS I had the full vario panniers, these loaded to the point of being squeezed shut, a large ortleib holdall and smaller bmw waterproof hold-all, plus rucksack held on with a series of caribiners, bungees and cargo nets.

Yes, I know not very safe, but I dont have a 4 wheel license.

What I have learnt is that the GS and GSA both manage large heavy loads very well, you need to balance it out (L &R) as best you can to aid handling, but the engine will pull great and no issues with reduced breaking. You need to stay a bit sharper and have good upper body strength to pull it off though.

In short, load it up, it will carry twice as much as you might think... :thumb2

mmmmmm

Bit of a mixed bag here but nonetheless I am very very thankful for all the replies.

10kg does seem a little light though, I`ll see what it looks like later - I am sure to have ten bags of suger kicking about if not the missus is off for a shopping trip!

I did a 6000 mile trip on a GSA with varios carrying 20-25kg per case. No issues other than getting in and out of hotels:thumb2

Hate to disappoint, but.....sticker inside every case says no:

Load them till they fall off:D

Use pannier liners because you don't want to be carting dirty panniers into hotel rooms:thumb

it's fun when you enter the room, put your panniers on the bed.
get your gear off and then move the panniers off the bed.

Double Mmmmmmm

Well, geezers, firstly thanks for all the replies - we certainly have our fingers on the pulse when it comes to a very well subscribed forum :thumb2

I saw the sticker about the 5kg`s load - although I am sure it is correct it does truly seem bollocks :nenau

I have also seen the other extremes  and I think I am going to go, if poss, for an equally loaded 10kg and that should be uber uber fine!

Thanks again for all the replies, awesome response inc all the pm`s.

Well I don’t know how much it weighted, but a Land Rover differential including the carrier fits in a top box and fairly sure that weights a lot more than 10 kg!! :augie:augie

Typical 'cover your arse' bullshit. Makes it 'correct' for them, not for you !

I would have said so long as you are not carrying panniers full of plumbing tools then, if it'll go in, it'll be ok.
If, as you say, you are packing for a normal trip i.e. a mix of clothes, tools, tent etc, then I very much doubt you could overload them.

Oh and +1 on the pannier liner bit.
