BMW Varios Left and right weigh the same 6KG each.
Far too heavy and quite fragile in a fall. The alloy trim sheet is very easily scuffed and is not sold as a spare.
I don't think the ability to reduce the width is worth the extra complexity and weight.
My wifes Givi 21l panniers weigh 1.75 Kg each and due to their easy top loading carry almost as much as the BMs. They are the same width as the GS1200 when fitted to her F650GS.
The good point about the GS1200 Varios is they do look good on the bike.

I'm torn between the varios and Touratech Zega Pros on my new bike. The difference in price is about £450. I'm probably not going to do any offroading. I'm slightly put off by the MASSIVE racks that will be left behind when the panniers aren't on the bike (which will be about 70% of the time), but like the top loading facility. And I like that the varios are properly waterproof and much slimmer. Decisions decisions
I like the Varios on my gs. They're usually only on the bike when I've got the Mrs on as pillion...

Once you've got used to the convenience of top loaders, plus the ability to easily use all the space, side loaders seem much too faff.

Save a grand and strap a bag on the back for the weekend away you'll do this summer. Rest of the time a cargo net will suffice for those trips back from Tescos
Don't know if you need to know the exact weights to realise that the varios are okay - but they weigh a feckin ton - even empty.

I had my L vario pannier ripped off the bike by a twat of an AA truck driver when setting off from some lights in Euston. I only realised it had been taken off at the next lights when I looked back
Went back down the road and a friendly Evening Standaaarrrdddd vendor had it by the road.
The central fixing mechanism needed replacing (easy job) and the panniers have seen many more days.
Oh and many on here will testify how many times the bike has been slid down a track on the panniers
Tough little bastards they are - once an ally box gets properly whacked its difficult getting the shape right again. imho
They stay on the bike all the time as I commute daily on it.

If you are staying in a hotel on holiday, take no luggage , buy new cloths every few days an throw them away. Much cheaper than panniers.
Camping is different but how many people camp now? I do but most seem to look for a cheapish hotel.
If you tour 15 days per year for 3 years = 45 days
6 set of undies at £1.50 = £9.00, Get the right type and they double as trunks and wash as you swim.
10 sets of sox (unless they get wet) = £10.00
10 tee shirts = £30.00
= £49.00
Allowing double this for the women because they are a bit fussy = £147 for both of you.
Panniers £850,00 a set.
Worth considering.

I had a pair of wonderful and cheap pannier on my old Caponord. Awesome at 280 quid and the same 2 mill thickness as TT panniers.

I ordered them from Germany and came with fitting kit etc. chatting with the guys from g+g at the bike show and they now do a great and cheap quick release kit that fits most pannier rails..

If my Beemer didn't come with boxes I'd have them again in a shot.
