As indicated above it's kinda cat's whiskers ... if the bars and mirrors will go through (jinking required around vans and 4x4s) the panniers will too ... it's not usually quite as tight as it looks ... and if it really is that tight one is probably taking unnecessary risks, and irritating other road users ...
These days I've pretty much given up filtering in central London. Proper overtaking and opportunistic lane changes, yes, but wedging myself between moving vehicles has lost its, er, appeal. Besides which I nearly always find myself holding up someone on a smaller, narrower (sports) bike ... or a courier on a mission
I do filter on the motorway though ... where there is enough space, and the traffic is moving at less than 30 mph or so ... I put the hazards on (to augment my HIDs
) and I always try to acknowledge the considerate souls who do move their vehicles aside ... at all other times I fall into line ...
Anyhow, I find that for most of what I need the ally top box and (sometimes) the large lank bag do the trick, without adding to the width ...
