Both ours are like that and best option I think. No problems. Take off the old Vario mounts and sell them. Then just fit the new racks and get the keys coded all done.. have some better pics I think but found this first.

The Adventure side frames are carried by the plastic under pillion carrier. You can use the GS or the GSA top case rack.
As the latter is another afterthought with rack bolted to rack, I'm sure the Vario top box is the better option.
More versatile... in as much as you can expand it to get stuff in, and then collapse it when you get where you're going..... and if you're not carrying much more than your tool kit and a pack of sandwiches it looks less bulky IMHO
The GSA carriers looks tuff but both are carried entirely by the plastic GS carrier under the seat.
The whole thing is over engineered but carried on M6 and even M5 bolts.
Excess weight with the only benefit that it carried the cases.
Mines bolted through the plastic on to rear subframe. Had a fall over, gravelly roundabouts and apart from a few scratches on plastic corners and crash bars seemed solid to me. Made it easier to pickup as well not so far over, still its amazing what adrenalin and a busy road can do ..
I like the versatility of the vario top box and the extra size plus top entry of the ali panniers , this time next week the ali panniers will be fitted
