What tyres would a 1990 800GS have had on when new, please, and are they still available?

and what tyres would you recommend for mostly road use,

Thanks a lot, Graham

Metzler Enduro 3 were the orignal fitted tyre and are still available I really like these tyres, they vibe a bit on the road but do grip well and were developed specifically for the GS, however they wear quickly and carry a hefty price tag.

Tried and tested Metzler Tourances are a good choice for mainly road work.

Mr Farmer :ymca hates these but I love 'em :weights..and they look the part too !! Once bedded in you can honk along at whatever speed you want....had Continental TRial attacks on before these and they were very good as well..especially if not intending to go off road :thumb2

Are you suggesting TKCs for mainly road use
Not as crazy as it sounds Rob, I really like em.

Bertha is running Tourances at the mo which are good, and I have Enduro 3's on the Dakar which are good too.

Most tyres work well, mostly ya mind playing tricks regarding tyres you like and tyres you don't. There are very few bad tyres out there IMHO.

Always tubeless on a paralever ( well unless you are going across the Sahara and intend to change the tubes yourself :D )

Incidently had a set of Avon Distanzias (excuse spelling ) on a big single I once owned and they were bloody superb tyres as well !!

Distanzias! That's the buggers I had on before. I couldn't think what they were called. I was very happy with them too. I'd have another set if I didn't need a more knobbly pattern.

just to throw some more into the discussion. I quite like the avon distanzias but be aware there are 2 versions in airhead sizes. one is a T rated and the other H rated. the T has 11.5mm of tread and the H has 8mm of tread and alot less meat on the sides. I am not sure if the compound is the same and they are both a little lacking in serious offroad use but fine on the road and unmade roads, gravel, hard packed surfaces. obviously the faster rated ones are better for sustained highspeed road use. for general use i would go for the T rated ones because an extra 2.5mm of tread has got to be worth a few extra thousand miles :rob i think i will be trying TKCs next probably just to confirm they are just as squirmy as they were when i had them on my KLX but who knows :rob they may just supprise me (as long as the supprise isnt a trip down the road on my arse like it was with the KLX):blast:blast

What d'ya need a more nobbly pattern for Al, Tagnuts causing you a bit of grief :D:D:D (if you didn't read viz in ya yoof, this'll probably not mean much:blast)

My lane gets a bit slippery in the winter and Tourances can't cut it.

Oh, and my gusset is already lemon fresh thank you. :thumb

Decisions! Decisions!

I have Avon Distanzias on my g/s and find them quite good,

didn't know there were two types, will check mine out later,

Kenny, in the workshop man i downloaded from this site (thanks guys) it says something like, tubeless tyres should only be used if the rims have a hump, whatever that means.

avon , tourances, metzeler , mmmmmm! still quite like the looks of the tourances,

thanks again for all the info, what a great site

cheers graham
