Hi all,
My wife and I are taking a short break staying in Giverny during next July. On the way down we will be passing through Rouen and thought it would be nice to spend a couple of hours there. Rather than just dive straight in and get lost and frustrated it would be great if anyone could recommend spot to head for where we could park up, (on the pavement or whatever !!) have a beer and watch the world go by. We will be arriving on the A28 from Calais. Thanks.

Be careful. For some......

it was the road to Rouen.

Hi Gee, as a suggestion, the Place De General De Gaulle is dead centre of Rouen (right under the Google map pin if you search for Rouen) and is fairly easy to get to from the A28. There's a small plaza in front of the cathedral which had loads of bikes parked there when I visited two years ago.

This point is very close to the historic centre of the town. From there you can walk through the labyrinth of lanes, alleys and squares until you find your spot.

I visited Giverny too on my way South from Rouen. Monet's house & garden was beautiful in the sunshine, but I got waterlily fatigue after a couple of hours.

Have a great trip.

Many thanks for the suggestions guys. Place General De Gaule looks just about right (as you say Pip looks good for bike parking and looks easy to get to with a straight run in from the A28 to the north) very clear picture on Google Earth.
Thanks again.

I remember going to a grand prix there more years ago than I wish to admit to. and have tried to find the circuit since. Have now found where it was via google and will go for a nostalgic hour next time I am passing through. I still remember the sound of F1 cars coming through the valley especially the Honda. It would have been much slower than nowadays but it seemed pretty fast then and you could get so close to the circuit, something that modern day spectators couldnt even dream of.
That shows that I am old enough to stop this silly motorbiking thing but cant get excited by 4 wheelers anymore and just been out to finish cleaning the bike and packing it away from the salt for a month or two, hope its not too long.

I Called off in Rouen on way back from Spain this year - great little town - if a bit confusing because lots of it is one way or dual carriageway through the centre. I went and had a look at the cathedral and the square (a great market there) also the final town where Joan of Arc was burnt so lots of sculptures and interesting architecture.
Streets are very narrow with lots of posh shops but I found trying to find somewhere to eat early a pain due city mainly coming alive later - it also has lots of posh restaraunts which were too expensive for "just passing through grub". Bloody loads of homeless and tramps as well!

Loads of decent hotels though and I would go for one in centre of town rather than the outskirts - most have underground garage.

Good luck
Rik
