Hi all,
Anyone has news on opening and closing dates for the stelvio pass?
I am trying to make a trip to there by mid september.

Thanks,

You'll be fine in mid Septemebr - latest conditions are reported here including webcams http://alpineroads.com/passstatus.php

The website also lists many other passes in the area and gives a view of what they are like to ride.

Check your dates.

They close it to motors for one day to give cyclists uninterrupted access. Sod's law dictates that this will be the day you choose!

Dont be to sure abt that i went july 2010 it was closed due to snow as was the grosslockner.

Can't comment about the Stelvio as it's too far from here for me to have the right info but as far as the Glockner goes you are actually more likley to find snow in July, or August for that matter, than in September.

On of the problems with the "move on every day" style of touring is that you have the one chance to ride the Glockner for instance. Better to pick an area and stay a while and pick you day. I have ridden the Glockner more times than I can remember (it's hard living here!) and almost every time the weather is different. In bad weather it can be downright dangerous but on a good day it's almost as much fun as the Nockalmstrasse.

It was closed the day we went in september last year.had to ride back down to italy, and find a b and b for the night.Didn'T bother us,just part of the trip.

Its a road I have done once and never again. Not in great nick but a MUST DO at least once in your biking life. Its a little over rated in my opinion to be honest, BUT you wont be disappointed.

If I remember correctly the umbrail has some loose graqvel so be careful.

Hot dogs at the topof the Stelvio are pretty damn good to boot ;)

( Word is, they are trying to toll that road to raise money in the area ).

I did it in mid october last year, bit of snow about off the road but the weather was beautiful sunshine and the road perfectly clear and dry.
I wouldn't do it again but glad i've done it.

+1 :thumb2

The Umbrail has about a mile of graded gravel, including a couple of hairpins which were horribly slippery in the p*ssing rain in 2010 :( The worst bit though are the ridiculously tight hairpin bends as you start climbing up it through the forest. The wide bars on the GS were a real PITA - it was much easier on my VFR800 in 2005.

Me and my mate rode the Umbrail in 2010, two up on a ZZR1400 and GTR1400 - not exactly difficult on a sportsbike (in the dry) so if you have a nice day and fancy a great alternate way up / down I would recommend the Umbrail.

Yeah, I rode it on an rr7 fireblade, in the dry. But if the weather was iffy it would be a real PITA as sven says.
