Fixed it 
Eventually, now running on iTunes 6. But in the meantime managed to lose the majority of my songs, then used one of those undelete programs, still couldn't find it. So I thought I know use my back up from the external hard drive and that's playing up.
Lost about 500 songs.
Starting to get fed up with windows, starting to save for a Mac.
