Take a read of this thread, seems 50/50 ATF and Acetone make a very good penetrating fluid. I'd guess any light oil would be a good substitute for ATF, maybe 3 in 1...

Acetone will make your plastics melt like chocolate in front of a fire....

use with caution.

I use it to clean plastics with no problems at all. In fact just recently this;

is being cleaned with acetone. After:

They should have tested de-icer for its releasing properties too. The reason why acetone works is its rapid evaporation (same goes for de-icer). Anything that has a low viscosity and will therefore flow into the threads easily and then evaporate rapidly helps release. It's the rapid evaporation that does the work not the viscosity and why WD40 is shite as a releasing agent.

Dip a cloth into acetone and you will feel how cold it gets as the acetone rapidly evaporates.

I've used lighter butane from a can with good effect in the past. Might just be the thermal shock but it can loosen stubborn threads.
Put yer fag oot first, mind.

Plumber's pipe freezing spray ideally with a foam muff to hold it onto the job does a good job. Then heat it rapidly with a hot air gun.

Take care using acetone - it dissolves the cornea of the eye, suspected of causing liver damage & can cause dermatitis through removal of natural oils. Other than that it is an excellent organic solvent

Been using it for years, was "issued" with it at work and know the safe handling drills. Thanks anyway. :thumb2

It's also the main ingredient of nail varnish remover (along with a castor little oil).

Try methanol for some really nasty organic solvent.

Nail varnish remover is also free, as long as you don't use too much and do when she's out.
