Air filter

...just got a call from my dealer. It appears that my 09 F8 GS needs a new and improved air filter. Anyone else been invited in for a filter check?

Hi all, just thought I'd post this for info.

When I bought my Akropovic a while back off here, the guy said to get a K&N or BMC filter to let the can breath properly. But I couldn't find one?

I've been on the K&N website, and it's not listed for 2008 F800GS. They're going to let me know when it is. BMC don't seem to have one listed either. I then saw one on here for a R1200GS/GSA /F800GS offered by Cuprinol Man. I had my doubts, but it was a bargain, so I had it. And it fits fine. Result.

There has been some talk on here of a filter recall, so I wonder if the part No has changed for early models like mine. The K&N website lists it for 2009/2010, and has it as the same part No as the 1200GS. Infact, the part No for an air filter on RealOEM.com for my bike is listed on the K&N cross comparison chart. Perhaps they don't realise this bike came out in 2008?

When checking on advrider there was some talk of fitting a performance filter from a 1200GS, but it said you'd need to modify the 2 inlets as they interfere with the flow as the 1200 filter is bigger.

Having fitted mine, I can tell you that the K&N is actually slimmer than the filter I took out.

If like me you've been looking at a performance filter, or a washable filter, then look at the offerings for a 1200GS. If anyone wants to try a side by side comparison to see if the mods are worthwhile, then just pop over.

I have had a K&N in my 800 for the last year and a half. In my opinion, does help the bike breath allot better. There is also a slight power gain and noticeable when over taking. From memory, I brought it form Nippy Normans. Think I still have the packaging at home if someone wants me to check the part No. Note though, it does need a clean every now and again, I normally clean with compresses air then re-oil with the K&N stuff.

K&N say not to use an air line to clean it, it'll damage the cotton fibres. Just wash it out. They do their own cleaner (surprisingly cheap), but I think you can also use thinners.

K&N filters...

I was thinking of going this way (passed the 600 mile mark so broken in. I hope!) but these get mixed reviews. There is a certain cadre of bikers who say that these filters let in too much and damage the engine?

From a complete novice point of view - if they let in more air then surely they have wider gauze apertures that would allow more/larger particles of dirt in?

Has anyone who has been running these for a while noticed any ill effects?

Had my K&N in for 2k miles, no problems. I have fitted K&N filters to most of my bikes and had no ill effects, put one in the car yesterday. I fitted an Italian aftermarket filter to my new 660 Tenere back in 09 as they were the 1st to do one, they claimed 54% airflow increase, i had it dyno'ed by Dynajet and it came in at 18% increase :augie which despite predictions on a forum of running lean and burnt valves etc. Dynajet said all loada shite.

K&N have been the default choice for cars and bikes since I was a teenager. Believe me, that was a long time ago.:rob

Most factory fit filters are made of paper (because it's cheap), K&N and BMC are made of cotton gauze, that is why they flow air better. Plus being cotton, they are washable (just like your undercrackers).

We sell face masks at work for working in a dusty environment, and the good ones are cotton gauze. The cheap ones are paper.

Thanks for the info. Installed one on my 650. I didn't buy the GS for going quick so i can't comment on top end, power etc however i'm pretty sure i'm seeing a few more mpg...

Fitting K&N Air Filter to F800GS

I have been given a new K&N Filter for my F800GS.

Can anyone tell me if it actually does make a visible difference to the performance?

At the moment I have no intentions to buy an aftermarket exhaust.

Regards

Tony

I've got both an Akro and K&N. It does make a difference, but not vast. The bike is smoother and more responsive, with more mid range and top end.

This is subjective as I haven't had it on a dyno.

I've got just the K&N with stock can on a 658 and it does make a difference when you hit the midrange. That said, i may find this more noticeable as i think the 658 has fairly flat power delivery whereas the 800 is slightly different?
