You don’t just go in to check the condition of the filter.

You go in with a new filter in your hand. I’ve probably done it 4 or 5 times.

30 screws to get in to the filter. BMW man must have had a laugh when he came up with this build.

I can change my car air filter in 10 minutes with only 6 screws.

You do get to know your bike tho’

Similar to my last bike....the Honda VFR1200X Crosstourer.......good lot of stripping to get to the air filter.
 
Changed the air filter on my KTM 350 enduro last night, in readiness for a dirty weekend
Took about 60 seconds to pull the side cover off and install
Cleaning the dirty foam filter in solvent and water, is a right messy pain though
 
1150 GS is a piece of piss
Remove seats
Undo 2-3 screws on the airbox lid
Drop a new paper filter in
Refit the lid and seats
Genuinely less than 5 mins
