petrol from breather?????????

Hi All

I still have a problem with petrol dripping from the tank breather pipe when the bike is parked up, I have tryed leaving cap un-latched but this has no effect. and it does not have to be full for it to happen????????
Please help as this is driving me mad.

I had this problem a while ago too.

There is a plastic 'float' type thing, at the end of a metal tube, which is attached to the inside of the filler cap. This 'float' had come loose on my bike and when I retightened it (It just clips into position), the problem was solved.

You need to remove the filler cap to get at it and either have a replacement rubber gasket to hand or leave your existing one for a few hours to contract back into shape.

Beware that you don't have a cracked fuel union. I have a 30L tank on my Adv and the bike always smelt petrolly when you moved it. I complained on the first service and was told 'It's cos you have a 30L tank', which I thought was a bit flaky. Next thing is that I am parking up and it's been spraying petrol on my leg at which point it was fixed with 'It's not uncommon Sir!'. Sir then asked why there has been no recall.

On my bike it was coming from below the tank on the right hand side near the injector housing.

if you have checked all the pipes (inside the tank and outside - both fuel lines and breathers) and their connectors and you are convinced (100%) that petrol (or just fumes?) is coming out of the breather - then you have exactly what I've got

I assume you've read my earlier threads. Like you the problem was driving me mad. But after replacing all likely parts logically I could not solve the problem. I only have fumes coming out of the breather - so I've now had to accept that it's just a correct function of the breather system.

The hot engine heats up the petrol in the tank (30 litre) and vents. Placing the end of the breather in a bowl of water creates constant bubbling (startuing about 5 mins after parking the bike and lasting for half an hour!). There is a lot venting and the fumes occassionally condense around the end of the breather, therefore dripping petrol. Is this what's happening to yours?
