petrol reading

i ran the bike about 10kms past the 0 kms left display, and when i refilled i put in about 16 litres. Is this correct. ie there are about 4 litres left after the bike shows 0 kms left in the tank?

I'll take '0' as exactly zero, and avoid seeing that digit as much as possible.... you may be happy doing different, but IC engines ain't no good without go-go juice!

Did you 'brim' the tank or just stop when the cut out cut in (if you know what I mean)? I can always get a few more litres in by filling to the brim with the nozzle out of the filler.

ok put it this way. when bike shows 40kms left to travel. i can only get 15 litres into the tank. This is with the bike on the centre stand and filling it to the neck. What do others get? can it be recalibrated?

The petrol guages are so flipping unreliable, I ran out of petrol once when the guague said 50 miles left! Read them with a pinch of salt

I have the 2010 GSA and the fuel gauge goes up and down as I ride, one min the range says 150 miles, a mile down the road and the range will read 180 a further mile and the range could be 100. contacted dealer and they are going to re-set the gauge and fit new lead under warranty. A lot of the new twin cam bikes have this problem but also some of the older ones too! Best to use the trip and you can't go wrong.

05 GS with similar unreliable readings. From a full refill It will show full until I have covered 100 miles then it drops to half where it stays till the warning triangle comes on and it displays 40 or so miles left. Like above, I go by mileage and always refill at or before 200 miles.

Best bet is always to use your odo. I can run the GSA 'till nearly dry irrespective of what the computer is telling me. Much safer bet and what most people on "lesser" bikes do anyway.

Doesn't it work out mileage left on current revs. i.e if you are idling in traffic it might say you have 200 miles left then when the traffic clears and you run full throttle it might then say you've only got 60 miles left as you would only have 60 miles left if you ran on full throttle?? In that respect its too clever for its own good as the predicted mileage is up and down more times than a whores knickers!!

My mercedes sprinter is the same as regards miles left in tank.

If you riding style is similar every time then the trip count is a more accurate indication.

My 2011 GS will take 16 litres when the fuel gauge reads zero so I assume it calculates only the main tank and not the reserve so in theory you should have another 40 miles left once you hit the zero mark. I don't risk running down the reserve anymore, ran out of fuel once and the GS is a bloody heavy beast to push to a petrol station.

That's about exactly what I get, yes. But I ran out once on a busy dual carriageway so won't be repeating that experience again! (I hope). I got 64 kms after zero till empty and then another six after laying the bike over to the side to try to swill a bit more around (as I could hear it swishing about).

No it's not. Your reserve is when you get the Fuel warning. That should be around 4 Ltrs left. Your range will reflect how hard you have been riding in the last few miles (around 47 was usual on my GS, 44 on the GSA).

I ran my 2008 GS for 4 miles with - - showing on the range, and it took 20.5 ltrs to the brim.

Are you sure that's right Sprocket cos' I've run mine to zero a number of times and it takes 16 litres (give or take a couple of tenths) to fill it up to the brim so that should mean there is still 4 litres in the tank when my gauge reads zero.

tomboy07, they all vary quite a lot, none seem to be that acurate, so you really need to trat the gauge as an indication until you get use to it. I set my trip every time I fill and can be confident ill get 350km plus from a filling. The tank officiall holds 22ltr (i think) but you'll not get that in there, as the lip on the fill cap does not let the air out of the tank, some drill a hole, that gets you another couple of litres....

mine stays on full for about 200km over the next 10km it goes to half full, then quickly down to 2 bars, stays there till 300km+ when it tells me 65 left on reserve, I can travel the full 65 and still not get more that 18 ltr in. So you just need to figure out what yours is telling you.

Hi guys,

I have a 1200 GSA 60 plate with 7k on the clock. I commute from Sheffield to Birmingham daily (154 miles round trip). I fill the bike up on Monday and it lasts 2 days, on my return trip I get the range warning light just before I join the M1 at J28, when I arrive home the range says between 12 and 20 miles left, when I fill up I get between 28 and 29 litres in the tank. The tank holds 33 litres so I reckon that when the range says zero there is give or take 4 litres left.
I've ridden it once 20 miles after the zero on the range, when I re-filled I got 30 litres in the tank. For me the range indicator is as accurate as it needs to be.
