Anyone been shafted by this? Just seen it on the news, appears to mess up the Lamda sensor, & causes rough running or engine shutdown.

Just put £15 of fuel in the tank tonight from Tesco`s Stockport.

Fingers crossed.

The wife's car is facing a £ 200+ bill so far!!!

Had a jeep in yesterday cut out @ petrol station ,he had just filled up so checked fuel (thought he may have put diesel in) & got brown water out of the fuel rail :( he had filled up in hullandward nr ashbourne

I'm pretty certain its got me. I live in the effected corridor, and although I don't recall that my last fuel was from Tesco I imagine that other retailers must be effected. Bike is running rough at low revs, bit noisy, very down on power. Unfortunately have got through the whole tank-full before hearing about the scare.

Couple of questions:

* Will the lambda probe recover? BBC website suggests it will
* Any other damage to watch out for?
* Anyone heard where to go for fuel which is definitely OK?

No idea at all where I got the last fuel so little prospect of passing on the cost of any damage unfortunately.

Thanks

I fill up at Tesco Milton, Cambridge just off A14 but I use the super unleaded because at 99 octane it makes the GS run like a dream. Had no problems what so ever, I last filled up Tuesday evening. Its made by the same company that supply Tesco with the cheap stuff. I get about 220 before the light comes on and about 250 miles per tank.

I wouldnt use the normal unleaded as I have found it seemed to misfire/pink and generally run badly on it. The 4 major fuel companies all supply good quality fuel.

i use 90% tesco petrol & diesel. the other 10% is when it's more convenient to go to shell or whatever. had no trouble at all. ever (except when i put petrol in my TDI  ) no pinking, not even on my le mans which is supposed to have 5 star.

my guzzi's, airhead & 1150 are incapable of telling the difference between premium & super as their ignition systems are too dim.

i've tried shell super whizz bang in my 1200, which can tell the difference, but i can't :D

i will be avoiding tesco in the near future though :P

Looks like it's a Silicon contaminant in the petrol.
This should wear off the sensor in time.
If it's affecting your vehicle drastically, you may want to remove and clean the sensor.

I happen to work for a company which manufactures oxygen (Lambda) sensors. I will ask our engineers on monday if a sensor can recover from silicone contamination.

Never use supermarket petrol, you don't know where it's been :rob

I've got a diesel :P

As promised I've just had a chat with a couple of our engineers. Their opinion is that the oxyhgen sensor has no chance of recovering from this nor will you be able to clean it. The silicon will not only be on the protective metal sheath but also on the sensing element underneath it. The silicon will get burn't on by the exhaust gases. Replacement is the only cure.

thanks for that confirmation
let this be a warning for thoes people who want to seal up there exhaust sytem with silicone sealer,..... dont do it as it can poisen the Lamda sensor
