Hello all
I've wired a cig lighter charger to the bike battery to enable phone charging on the move and over night while camping. The socket is working and will charge a small video camera but won't charge my phone ( Samsung Galaxy S4). Checked the usb adapter and the cable and they are fine.

Does anybody have an idea what the problem may be?
Thanks

What happens if the phone is turned off while charging? The USB device might not produce enough current to run the phone and kick off the charging circuit.

I think, but could be wrong that to charge an I phone or galaxy or the loike you need 2 amps output.

The cig lighter socket that you have installed may not be giving that power output

If you've plugged a USB adaptor into the cig' socket, is that rated high enough? (The USB adaptor). Will need a high power one to push enough to charge the phone. Also, try the original USB lead, some are data only and not power and data. Get a fully wired one.

Roger.

Thank you for your replies.

Bendy toy. When the phone is turned off and plugged in it vibrates intermittently, no idea why????

Redrick, yeh the charger is 2amp (although it will charge slowly with a 1amp charger).

I've been out and got a new charger although I could only get a 1amp one and it works. So it's not the socket but the original charger. It must be faulty, allowing some juice through, enough to charge the camera but presumably less than 1amp. Very strange!!!

I'm guessing you've got a ciggy-USB adaptor and you are using a normal USB cable to connect it up?

It can be because the phone thinks it a data connection, so won't charge at any more than about 0.5A. You can fix the issue by getting a charging specific cable, or by doing this:
http://www.instructables.com/id/Cheap-and-simple-USB-car-fast-charger-mod/

I've got a couple of these micro ciggy USB chargers that are limited like this (that I've modded) and another one that's fine.

G5RJO. Yeh, the usb adapter I origionaly tried is the genuine Samsung one (2amp) with the genuine data cable. I'm puzzled what has happened to them adapter. It's failing to charge a phone but is charging a camera.

If you go to settings/general and then battery it will tell you if it thinks it is charging or not and how it's charging as in DC (USB port) or AC (high power) . If it thinks it's on a USB port it will take forever to do anything. A proper charge cable would sort it or open the charger and short the 2 middle pins which would normally be the data pins.

Just use an Anker or similar charger. I charge Sena Smh20s x2 (pillion) and phone all at the same time as it has three USB outlets. It goes in my back textile jacket pocket and no probs. The charger lasts for about six galaxy phone charges and goodness knows how many Sena charges though this is only done when we are travelling more than six or seven hours music sharing etc all day long. The two hella sockets are for basically emergency tyre pump or air beds etc.
