Picos - July - What is the one thing you would not want to miss?

This ^

Just excellent. Although JB does have a point, whilst excellent under any circumstances, it does give a little more for couples.
That was my point - it was maybe somewhere to enjoy with your loved one, to relax in the grounds and walk in the area and use the pool, for relaxing afternoons etc
Rather than eat/sleep and get out on the bike daily with mates from 10-5 & miss the hotel’s tranquil surroundings

Having stayed at many hotels in Spain, the del Oso is one of my favourites and imo much better than Fuente De. I’m not sure why it is better for couples, but I did indeed go with my wife.

It’s in my top 3 for Spain as is the Monte Igueldo and the Monasterio de Zoila

Sandpiper in Barbados is probably my favourite.

Smartbazza and I are heading to Picos 9th July for 10 nights. What is the one thing you would not want to miss? Can be a road/town/experience.

At only 250 square miles, it’s not a particularly large area. That puts it at about the same size as Greater Manchester. You can tell how small it is, when the top ‘Must do’ recommendation on UKGSer is a hotel and the second, a road.

So, what is it most famous for? I’d guess, its scenery, as it’s a protected ‘park’. There again, so is Dartmooor; but I’m not sure many would chose to spend ten days on Dartmoor. What else? Its temperatures in summer are lower (on average) than broiling on the plain of Spain. Walking and ‘outdoor’ activities, seem to dominate, helped no doubt by the scenery and lower temperature.

What else? The cable car is popular, for sure.

But some “Don’t like heights, mate”.

You might as well be guided by this:

Or…. “Get out and ride yer bike, mate”.

I’ve been with my wife once but usually with mates.
We did four nights there in June 2024.And another 3 nights in September . Then another 3 nights last year .
We’d planned to go into Potes one night but never bothered as everybody preferred chilling out on the terrace with a g and t or beer before dinner .
And as the food was so good at the Del Oso, all wanted to eat there every night .
Going again this May.

Apologies to Arsey. This is what is displayed for Hotel Osos on an I phone. Explains my confusion.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. Will get a good look later.

As Arsey says, Riano is beautiful and the 3 roads in and out are stunning

last trip
1769244167935.jpg

That was four days and 2 options for getting to and from Santander

Free handed a couple of days. There are so many excellent roads and areas
One unplanned trip got us to Mirador Fuente Del Chivo at Alto Campo
Dead end road but quality surface for the ski trippers

You need a clear day otherwise you are just sat in a cloud.

The CA - 280 was a great balcony road

As previously mentioned, the statues, on great roads, some of the minor roads are gems

If you want to be in town (Potes), with the choice of local facilities etc, the Hotel Valdecoro is a good base, plenty of bars and restaurants in a 5 mins walk. Has covered bike parking round the back

We started in an out-of-town hotel but a couple of guys in our group fancied being in a town for bars etc so we moved.
Our original place was the Penas Artiba which was very quiet, but awesome value and a really nice host.

My own personal choice of Hotels is the PAradore at Fuente de

Dunno why but I really like it and the road up and down is a belter both for a relaxing wind down after a day of hooning or as a great warm up for the day

I’ve been to the Picos many times but never to that bear statue and never the Hotel Del Oso but I’ve marked them both down for next time. Thanks

Perhaps you need to tell the OP, your top ‘Must do’ sites, by way of exchange.

I had a trip up there. It was very windy which made changing direction on a few of the hairpins interesting.

I only had a couple of minutes at the top as the mist was rolling in so I made a dash for lower altitudes to the Posada Ormas in a tiny hamlet at the bottom of the valley, not far from Reinosa https://maps.app.goo.gl/TmFwegcdUCETGQSr7

The CA280 over Balcon Cordosa os another great road.

Anyone spending 10 days in the Picos will need to expand out of the national park for the reasons Wapping mentions.

Heading west into the Somiedo is also a good plan.
