Picos June 2023

i'm only winding you two up. I'm looking to change my bike soon and am on the fence with loads - least likely another GS. list so far:

wing
super adventure s
k1600 (i know)

Wing is ace.
And the guys on the trip were kind enough to wait for me to catch up.

The ‘wing and the 1600 are very different bikes. There again, the various model versions of the ‘wing and the 1600 are pretty different, too. The basic test ride I had on the ‘wing was not enough for me to decide, whilst the 60 hour loan of one I had booked, has had to be delayed as I have ruptured my Achilles.

If you do get around to riding either, do try and borrow one for more than the seemingly standard, “Take it out for an hour, mate” offered by most dealerships. They do take a bit of getting used to.

I have no idea what a ‘super adventure s’ is. Bikermate style, I can’t be arsed to look. Anyone got a link?

Looks like a fantastic trip with great friendship, food, hotels, beer and roads. I'm not at all jealous

My 1290 is due a valve service soon, 18k miles. A new chain and sprockets, new set of tyres too. After splashing that much for the service, I might as well keep it a bit longer a year or two maybe. Let see what EICMA will show us for 2024.
I like the look of V4 Rally Multi, but it is a thirsty beast and completely overpriced. I will only ever buy it once somebody else had taken the VAT hit and depreciation values have brought it down to a sensible asking price.

Desetr X is a lovely looking bike, But as my other half likes to come with me on day trips, it is perhaps a bit cramped two up, especial as I am quite tall.

HUsky Norden 901 Expedition. Another nice looking bike, with great amount of kit as standard. which makes standard Norden overpriced in comparison. Quite tempted, but for same reasons as Desert X, it might be out the question.

Perhaps another (newer) KTM 1290? don't know. will have to see....

The 2021 onwards Super Adventure is a nice bike with COG similar to GS. It is also a bit more stable on the road (no personal experience) due to slightly longer wheel base.

K1600 is lovely and smooth, but expensive to service according to an acquaintance who's got one.

Wing is a very capable machine. Don't ask me how I know.

Might be interested if you were doing it in September 2024

Saw this here last week

14 km or circa or 8.7 miles.

No cycles available as far as I know. The bar at the hotel, is fabulous, with plenty of outdoor seating, or you can swing your legs in the pool. Not once in four nights stay, did I (or others in our group) feel the need to go to Potes for a drink. Yes it is bigger town, but equally, it came across as crowded. We not even bothered to stop there once.

Dinner at the hotel, does not start until gone 8pm. If you are a meat eater, you will have plenty of options to choose from. As a veggie it was ok for me, but far from perfect.

In the (every) morning we had express breakfast. Meaning coffee and a cake out on the terrace. Or you can have lavish breakfast for few more euros.

Some nice hotels in Potes too
In 2019 we stayed in Panes (and initially it was against my better judgement), having been visiting the Picos since 1995 and having stayed in Riano, Cangas de Onis, Potes and Ojedo and a lovely wee place up in the hills outside Potes
The Covadonga in Panes turned out to be a favourable hotel in the village square and an excellent choice
If you are in a larger group, remoter hotels are fine - but exploring wee towns of an evening can yield some gems of restaurants or spectacles to see

14Km each way that will be good walk.
Thank you for the information as always.
I am sure the food will be excellent but it’s nice to have options.
I stayed in Potes in 2021 for 4 days ,after quick trip along the Spainish Pyrenees down to Madrid ,Salamanca Asturias and then the Picos.
My riding mate loves the area of Spain and due to work commitments in Sep 2024 have decided to go early in 2024.
I have looked all the information on the Hotel Del Oso and it warrants further look and see.
Rgds Allan

This is all you need , Jim owner is British, wife Pilar is Spanish and it’s a lovely walk into the village…..my 8th visit next year.
