Just got back from a short jaunt around Northern Spain. I spent a few days in Pamplona for the San Fermin festival, but was pissed most of the time on local rocket fuel called Paxaran, so didn't get many pix. However, I was in the Picos for a while and the scenery and roads were magnificent. Thanks to Judge for the GPS routes, they were all excellent, Andy! Also ta to those who recommended the Infantado Hotel near Potes, it was a sound base for exploration.

Some pix:

One of the best roads I've ridden for years was the C6312 between Cangas and Panes, through the gorge of the Rio Cares, 45 klix of super-smooth sweepies, sheer bliss ;)

Puerta San Glorio - I glanced at the Quest which gave an altitude read-out of 5280 feet - exactly one mile up!

Pasado de Valdeon, way off the beaten track, but well worth the detour. A brilliant trip, great roads, scenery, people and weather. Would recommend it to anyone - I can't wait to get back!

Hi Shuck Raider,

Could you post your co-ordinates/ route plans etc? I'm heading off shortly to N. Spain and would love to check out some of those areas - they look marvellous.

So did you do any fishing while out there?

Will

Will, I wish! Thought about bringing a small 4 piece flyrod and some kit, but just couldn't find anywhere to stash it on the bike. The rivers were crystal-clear and full of brown trout, saw some around 40 cm long in the Rio Deva. Was talking to a Spanish bloke fishing the Rio Sella and he said that there were over 350 salmon caught in that river so far this season. Due to the high temps, most of the guys seemed to fish very early in the morning, pack it around 11am and head out again from 7 pm until dusk.

Permission seemed to be fairly accessible, except for the usual Spanish love of bureaucracy, i.e. you get a Form CF1q23XZ from one guy, take it to another building to have it stamped, drive across town and pay the Commissioner somewhere else etc, etc. I'll definitely fish next time I go back and play the dumb foreigner role - "Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't know I needed a permit." :D :D
