Spain (Picos) and France

Off to San Sebastián tomorrow, planning on taking an indirect route to pick up the CL-627.

I assume you mean the CA281 going north, as the 627 goes south into Castille y Leon (same road, just the number changes at the regional border!). 281 is a great road.

this is my favourite pintxos in San Seb https://bartxepetxa.es/ - anchovy heaven

But only open Wednesday-Saturdays from memory .
Quite a few bars closed on a Monday.

opens on a Tues PM from 7pm, and lunch on a Sunday. Monday is the only day it does not open at all
https://bartxepetxa.es/contacto/ has the times

Monday is not a good day to be in the Basque region, as I discovered when deciding to have a day off riding in Bilbao. All the places I wanted to visit were closed!

Edit: although Google maps says not open Sun/Mon/Tues - an incongruence!

Nope. South and then north east. Apparently only adds 10 mins to the journey!

Have flagged it in my Google maps so we can check it out

Monday

Headed east out of Potes on the CA-184 followed by the CL-627. Town was super busy but the road out was almost deserted. Another fantastic road that’s well worth riding. Good surface and twisty through the canyon and then hugging the mountain side. Fantastic!

There was a viewpoint but we were in the clouds so didn’t stop for photos.

After the reservoir it was pretty dull N (UK A) and A (toll free motorway / dual carriageway) roads across and up to San Sebastián.

We arrived at our AirBnb to secure underground parking, a fresh omelette/tortia and a bottle of wine on the house! No photo as it was 5pm and we had skipped lunch so it didn’t last long!

Will post an AirBnb link when we’ve left as a recommendation as I expect it’d be a great place for others, the host even left a bus card with €18 on it!

Anyway boring update so far but we’ll head into town soon so there might be an evening food update!

Monday is not the best day for San Sebastián as many of the best bars are closed .
Baztan should be open and is great though as are quite a few in that area

Tuesday

I did really badly at taking photos again today - sorry!

Chilled start to the day in San Sebastián today. Was cloudy and we had a late night so didn’t move fast but the sun came out and we wandered into town for lunch.

It was busy but our host had recommended Igeldo on the harbour so we headed there. A nice glass of Alberino and fantastic scallops were enjoyed followed by octopus and salad.

Then we decided to get the ferry over to the island. €5 each return for a 5 min ferry, not the best and not the worst. A quick 30 min walk around enjoying the views and then we headed back. Load of sea gulls on the island including a ton of chicks which were kind of cute considering they turn into bin pirate and sandwich snatchers!

After we got back to town we headed over to La Viña just before they closed and picked up some cheesecake. It was hot and sticky out so we headed back to the Airbnb to enjoy it with a coffee and relax for a couple of hours.

It was very good - creamy, rich, delicious.

Then photo fails but this evening was back into town for tapas.

First was Gabarron Vermuteria which I highly recommend- great service and the pulled port bun is incredible (mini burger was ace as well).

Then on to Bertakoteka for shrimp and a crab salad both delicious and they have an award for their cheesecake so I expect we’ll be back!

Finally back to Txikito Taberna for a couple of tacos and a mini cocktail to round off the night.

All well worth a visit if you’re ever in town. Knackered now so off to show and bed - will try and do better for photos tomorrow!

Excellent.
The cheesecake from La Vina is sublime

Wednesday

Running a bit behind but will catch up soon.

Another explore day in San Sebastián. We strolled into town and decided to check out the aquarium which has a history of the area on the first floor and the animals lower down. Cool little display and some fun animals.

After that we went for a wonder into the old town again to find lunch.

Atari Gastrolekua did a fantastic beef cheek and foi à la plancha:

Then we wondered back to Bertakoteka for a couple of prawns followed by cheesecake which we’d heard good things about. It was better than La Viña hands down, absolutely fantastic.

Not doing well at photos am I?

It looked exactly like it did in their picture and was on point!

After that we wondered through town a bit more. There was a guy on the beach front playing the trumpet which was very cool.
