Pillion utility box

I agree about the peli boxes - they are good bits of kit and, as it happens, I`ve already made several base plates for them for the lads (including Nutty) for either the pillion plate or for the rack itself.

I clearly missed something obvious when I was suggesting a method of fastening base plate... you’ve already conquered that bit!

So, does the box you designed mimic the rear seat fastenings?

Guys, trying to answer as many (kind) suggestions as possible - the lock was moved FROM the front on suggestion from one of us, a side positioned lock won't be as secure (the other side could be more easily levered open) and a rear fitted lock will be too difficult to access with a key (and I'm not going back to a combination lock, ooooh that got a good slagging). Also the top fitted lock (as is) still allows stuff to be laid on top of it (if need be) so it really is the best, most cost viable solution IMHO.

And yes it clips on and clips off like the pillion seat, using the BMW key as you normally would.

Just a suggestion but if you made the case sides with rolled over [folded?] edges with an internal ledge so the locked lid sat down inside the casement rather than over it as in a conventional case. Possibly mount the hinge internally too making it more secure from attack.

You could possibly have four strapping loops mounted on the side of the cases to allow securing a bag over the case.

Yes, thaks, I`m going to do `something` to retain a load on top.................

day off today tho :bounce1

Think we need to look at this in a logical way, are we looking for a utility box that is pretty secure and waterproof as best as it can, or are we looking for a fort knox safe, if Mark is going to get this out at 200 quid, there has to be some give and take.

EXACTLY - thanks fella, it restores my faith when I get a little understanding. As I said before, we (including me) have some fantastic ideas but they are either too hard to do or simply put the price into 'daft land'. It's simply a lockable waterproof-ish utility box but what it does benefit from is an input from bikers like us which, IMHO, all other manufacturers seem to lack. So, looking at the original design (by the US company Adventure Designs) this is miles ahead!

I'm liking this.

Now, when you get a minute, can you make an additional fuel tank to sit in the same position on a Tiger 800? :D

Mark, will the standard topbox still fit on the rack? Also, will it fit with the standard plastic grab rails and Vario topbox?

It would be good if you are able to incorporate bungee points-- would it be possible to make the box so that the lid is horizontal, (when viewed from the side), to provide a more stable platform for stuff to sit on. Obviously that would give a wedge shaped box but more space is always welcome. Stuff carried on the pillion seat is able to squash into the seat pad when it's in place but would slide around on the solid box, towards the rider-- a flat top would help to prevent too much movement.
Cheers.

Yes a standard top box will fit and I'm 99.99% sure it'll fit the GS. I'm gonna do bungee points on the lid so that anything stored on the lid can be fastened down (this will also mean I do not spend more time getting the geometry right for a horizontal surface (btw I learnt a long time ago that flats which are inclined forward always look better on a bike).

Yes I can but it would cost a small fortune (in comparison) and I don't have a tiger....... :)

for every discerning short range tiger owner and only £125, soon bungee on:homer, oh and mark just a small suggestion on the dimension front I like the way the yanks have it away from the riders seat to maybe accommodate the more how should I put it.....those of a larger surface seat area:aidan

No, I will make sure it doesn`t rattle (ain`t that a pig on a bike eh) and no, never taken the wrong way - I can`t roll stuff (we should be able to do so TBH) however `curves` can be done with small increment bending which gives nearly the same effect but it`s a ball ache and adds to cost so I didn`t do it.

And thanks for the kind words - it should be better as I`ve listened to everything that has been suggested :bow

Actually, the more I look at it the more it gives me the horn so yeah, I'm very happy with the evolution and how it's turned out :) gonna make a 'proper' one now, Tig weld it all up, get it powder coated and put some sexy stainless bungee hooks on it :)

Talking of sexy check out my 'honeymoon hat' in the top right hand corner - yes, my lady is a lucky lady :) - or it could be my drill safety hat.............

Seriously, thanks to all for helping me make something the customer 'Billy' will be chuffed with - it's a result of a lot of input from bikers.
