I'll try to remember to get them tmoz - I've got one being powder coated and one prototype so I'll measure that!

Mine is a 07 not a twin cam, mind you having asked I would not need the top box.
 
Mark, apologies for joining the thread late... great input from the team, and really like the end product; just the right size for a lock and a laptop on the daily commute...
...couple of observations if I may:
1) one aspect I liked about the US box was the ability to latch lid without locking it; ideally I guess you'd remove the current barrel lock and add some sort of latching mechanism to the back end (like the ally BMW top box), but that would add too much cost/complexity and may not be enough room? Maybe there is a simpler/cheaper latching method that would work alongside current lock?
2) to make most of the feature that you can easily remove from bike, how about a carry handle? Perhaps a single (folding?) handle on one end or two (fixed?) handles, one on each side, that double as bungee rails?
 
I'm a bit late to the party on this one...as usual.

I'm with the stainless steel brigade on this one, if using aluminium I think you would have to reinforce the joints (or use quite thick material), which I guess could look okay if you have the bmw panniers with riveted reinforcement, I assume your going to weld the joints?

Also for the LC there is copious use of stainless steel so the box is in keeping with this, an ally finish would look a little strange I think. I would tend to use something like this with no panniers. (ideal for putting a lock & chain in). You can always wrap it if you dont want a s/s finish but atleast its hardy.

On the large nut inside may I suggest a domehead so you have no protruding threads to snag on.

I would also suggest the anti-slip covering to the lid that you have on your pillion seat replacement plate.

Would suggest considering a thin anti-rattle covering to the base either felt / rubber?

I also tend to agree with no lugs, the pillion handrails are there to strap things too.

Hi Sticky and no worries, feel free to jump in at anytime. As answer to your good points;

Yes, I think I could introduce a latch, which in my mind would remove the need for a key if the lock was in the unlocked position, however I think that the added complexity (as small as it may seem) may not be justified with regards to cost (nor do I think it will be seen as a feature that is used a great deal). In this case the customer (`Billy`) really wanted an alternative to the yank design but not at the (perceived) high price ($300 + carriage + import tax). I`ve only just achieved this (if at all) - not by manufacturing it cheaper (actually it`s still been made as expensively as ever) but by simply sharpening my pencil and accepting less profit (I think). It`s `easy` for me to do because I don`t charge for my time and there`s no `middle man` (like a distributor) to pay for, I also don`t factor in the true charge of running a half a million pound asset just to make stuff for fellow bikers :)

Regarding the handle, the above does kick in again however I don`t think a handle would lend itself to the product. It`s kind designed as a semi permanent part which will always sit on the bike but rarely be taken off for the occasional pillion. but, of course, when it`s needed to be taken off it does so easily and quickly, like the seat itself. I don`t think that the majority of lads would want then to use it to carry about thus needing a handle.

Only my opinions fella and others may post differently but I just wanted to answer your kind suggestions.
 
Good valid points, but to be honest I would not want to be carrying a metal box around, some scrote might think its full of cash and bop you on the head, seriously Mark will this fit the 2017 GS LC with the Vario panniers on, or will the side panniers have to be left home, general idea is to use this box without them, but just wondering, if all fits snugly just in case.

Hi fella, its looking like SS (the weapon of choice) in this case is going to be too heavy (there`s also evidence of warpage with all the heat going into it) - not that it`s a deal breaker but I know its there and I won`t sleep well knowing that I can make it better (get a life I hear you say - quite rightly). Regarding ali I`m currently making one in 2mm ali (previous 1.2mm SS) and not only is it considerably lighter but I can assure you it`s gonna be bloody robust - I won`t cheapen the quality of the product by making it flimsy and yes most of the corners will be Tig welded. The thicker material also reduces the worrisome warpage.

It will come powder coated which will appeal to the majority of the lads I think but there`s nothing to say it can`t be `wrapped` - indeed I may look at a wrapping design for it coz I think it will look good - am kinda screwed down on price tho but not through choice.

On the large nut yes either a dome nut or a nyloc with no thread protruding to catch.

Re anti slip I have found that anything on the lid simply does not look good but i`m sure individual users will make their own modifications, including anti slip.

It`s been designed NOT to rattle - the fit into the front spigot housing and the locations at the rear give me (if I say so myself) trouser bananas :) indeed the front spigot is adjustable to allow for any movement to be taken up.

And yeah, I made one with lugs over Xmas.................
 
The dimensions look like one of the brands of tank bag. Would be interesting if they were compatible for a secure store of tank bank/ liner bag arrangement.
