Pillion utility box

Good valid points, but to be honest I would not want to be carrying a metal box around, some scrote might think its full of cash and bop you on the head, seriously Mark will this fit the 2017 GS LC with the Vario panniers on, or will the side panniers have to be left home, general idea is to use this box without them, but just wondering, if all fits snugly just in case.

As I`ve already said in a previous post fella I don`t actually know. Based on my knowledge of the GS and how little the rear end is changed from the GSA (geometrically) I can`t see the utility box stopping panniers or the vario topbox being fitted but I`m only 99% sure. That 1% has bitten me in the ass too many times so until I actually try it on a GS I can`t say. The initial design is based around a GSA coz 1) that is what the customer wants and 2) I`ve got one in my garage :)

I guess once the GSA one has been `vindicated` as a good thing I`ll happily focus on making it fit other models. This may seem like a `cop out` but, with respect, this sort of evolution and prototyping can take the Big Boys (TT W/Lich etc) months and months. I went from concept to near finished item over the xmas break! So the eventual testing and possible redesign for fit on other models should not take long.

The dimensions look like one of the brands of tank bag. Would be interesting if they were compatible for a secure store of tank bank/ liner bag arrangement.

mebbe, IMHO I think it will be better utilised as a (low level) security box for spare gloves, tools, booze (woohoo), tyre repair kit and as an option to lugging a top box about.

It`s been designed NOT to rattle -
I mean't contents rattling rather than the box itself. A metal box tends to act like an echo chamber so some sound deadening could help?

2mm Ali sounds okay and what I was getting at really. I do think you need to stay away from rivets though if possible to if you can do it in Ali and weld it then great, even if you have to put overlaps inside.
I guess the only way any external reinforcement could work was if you used some HDPE or similar corner blocks, but really thats adding cost and complication so its best avoided if possible.

Ah sorry, i understand and yeah I`m sure the lads will find solutions - I may use that rubberised open weave non slip stuff that stops rattling.

I agree, although I can do overlapping bits and rivet them (it would be cheaper as Tig is an expensive art) but the 2mm ali seems the best all round solution.

Whatever, it will be very well made & readily available for the price charged (not like Touratech stuff at all :D)

Oh completely agree otherwise it would be a top box on the pillion seat. But would be interesting to see a kreiga us20 and how it fits.

Cheers Mark anyway I am still in when we get the GS 2017 LC version out :beerjug:

I’m pretty sure it will fit a GS LC with Panniers but I suspect you may need to remover the passenger grab rails/rear rack (although I might be wrong I often am!). There fore it may not fit, in its present dimensions, along with a topbox on the GS LC.

That said it looks to me more like an alternative to a topbox rather than an addition.

In respect of the pre LC Bikes. If you want to load luggage on that area and own a vario topbox then just get the plate conversion kit (about £20) to fit your topbox there. I might even have one knocking around gathering dust somewhere.

Cheers for that info, well it will only be used for local bombing around, so as long as it fits on and off without taking bike to pieces it will be cool, I will wait on model 2 coming out for GS LC :beerjug:

Tis done.....

Thank you, took bloody ages, I have a pile of prototypes and I can see why other designing manufacturers don’t bother with ‘forum opinion’ - it’s contradictory, extremely subjective and in some cases fickle however it has huge benefits as it helps evolve a good design into a much better one. I’m very thankful for all the input, which has produced a better product however it’s a demanding mistress :)

I only opened the thread to see what was still being discussed (after 13 pages)and to venture that the box may look like it was designed by a committee!

[Actually - it looks pretty good]

You've come to the same conclusion! :D
