Pilot Road 4 rear nearly worn out at 4500 miles

Have you ever worried about this with your car?
There are lots of different makes of car tyre, as long as they meet the appropriate BS and you are using the right type of tyre you won't have any insurance issues.
Bikes are no different.
Regarding warranty issues I don't think BMW are going to reject a warranty claim because you fitted a GT instead of a TRAIL. Don't forget that the tyres themselves are not covered under the warranty as they are consumables.
The reason BMW will only fit approved tyres is that in the event of a problem with something they supplied the lawyers can pass liability down the line.

So I was passing the dealer today, and picked up the sheet of recommended tyres for the K51 (current GSA). Interestingly it only lists the Conti TKC80, Conti Trail Attack 2, and the Michelin Anakee 3. A year ago when I looked at the list for my 2014 GSA, the PR4 Trail was also on the list.

The service advisor did also say that BMW have now changed their policy on tyre fitment, and now delegate approval to the manufacturer. So - if the manufacturer says it is an acceptable tyre, then BMW will agree this. (This is all only relevant in the event of a warranty claim, of course).

I had a look on the Michelin website, they recommend the PR4 Trail, and 'suggest' the Anakee 2, 3 and Wild. No mention at all of the standard or GT versions though.

Had a Mutley on PR3's now on a GS with PR4's. Have a few mill. left on the rear and done 4370 mostly 2 up and now squaring off at the rear. Will try a different make next time just to compare. Happy with the PR's though. Puncture easily is my only gripe :D

I've just had a pair of the new Metzeler Roadtec 01s fitted. A friend who's opinion I trust has ridden 2k+ miles on them on an RT and reckons they're very good in the wet. He's using the version for heavyweight bikes and thinks they have stiffer sidewalls than some other comparable tyres (slightly bumpier ride), and although they have the occasional tendency to track longitudinal road imperfections they don't white line. I'm just about to head off on 2k+ miles in France so I'll know soon how good they are - hope I'm not disappointed as they're more expensive than PR4s...

I've got a set of Metzeler Roadtec 01s as well on my GSA lc and came from PR4 Trails.

There's no way I'm going back to PR4's again. The Roadtec's are better in every way IMO.

I wonder why Michelin make the PR4 GT in a 170 width? It's only the GS in BMW's range which uses a tyre in that width...

Had a PR4 GT which did about 5k miles before squaring off. The centre compound is still too soft imho Have fitted the new Bridgestone A40s now. Almost 1k on them and no wear visible! Only road use.

I have 3600 miles on a set of pr4 trails, the front is ok but as i was changing to adventure wheels on the gs, the rear being 2mm in the centre and 2.5 on sides wasn't worth re fitting so fitted a new trail,
4000 ish would have been in line with many on here, great all-round tyre for me,,
I have a annakee 3 rear with app 5mm and slight squared if anyone wants to collect,, it came with the wheels,,
Roamer,

It's a case of not being able to have a matched pair of tyres which is the issue.

You could get away with having a PR4 GT on the rear But it's not available in a size suitable for the front wheel on a GS/most big trailies so you'd need to put a Trail on the front with its differing compound and tread pattern. Not a matched pair of tyres could get you into trouble if investigated in an accident , very unlikely though.
