~ Pirelli MT21 Mud & Snow ~

I'm looking at a set of MT21's and have noticed that there is a M+S version.

Does anybody know what the actual difference is between a 'standard' MT21 and a M+S MT21

It may just be the extra markings on the tyres for different markets, same as the snowflake or mountains symbols

Some countries (Germany I think is one) require homologated winter tyres for road use between certain dates or when indicated by signposts

Ah yeah, that's quite possible isn't it........ I was sort of hoping they had brought out a version better suited to mud/soft going as they are great dry/rocky tyres but struggle a bit in good old English mud.

Yeah, I've used them on and off for years now as a reasonable dual sport tyre. Any idea re the OP?

Usually they remain more pliable in colder temperatures Andres

Whilst standard versions @ say below 5 degrees C are quite hard

Mud etc Does anything but a sand paddle really work in Mud

Ahhhh, fair point and no, not much works in proper mud.........there's always that eternal trade off between an off road tyre that works well on the road v works well in gloopy, off road condiditons.

They won’t last long if used in anger.
Both myself and Andy fitted a new pair to our bikes prior to a weekend jolly oop noorth.
Rear tyre 3/4 worn in 800 miles.
Front wear was fine

No M&S
Just MST = multi service tyre
Made in Indonesia too

I've never found them long lasting tyres (not an issue, within reason) but bloody hell Mike, you two must be animals to do that! Seriously though, I don't imagine a 690/701 is going to be kind to any off road tyre, the more off road biased the worse it will be, all part of the deal I guess.

Could it be down to sipes? Car tyres designed for snow have lots of narrow grooves on their surface - the idea is that the grooves (sipes) cause snow to stick to the tyre, then snow sticks well to snow and that's where the grip comes from.

So do the M&S tyres perhaps have fine grooves cut into the faces of the tread blocks??

Probably not, but it's my best idea!

Oooh ta, I'll check those out How do you find them on the road and in the wet as my 701 is my main bike now so obvs doing a lot of year round road miles?

As Mike said, the MT21s don't last long. I too changed my rear tyre before the trip and it's now just a touch less than two thirds down on tread, so it wasn't just their spirited riding. However, I find the tyres give me a lot more confidence in the mud than TKC80s, and as you know, I need all the confidence I can get. I would be happy replacing them often for the grip they give off road. I do like the TKCs but I'm now getting used to the Pirellis I think I might stick with them.

As for the Stone Kings, I've tried those too, great in mud and off road, but they really 'frit me up' on road generally and worse in the wet. I wouldn't have them again.

You and I have so much in common it can only be fate that has brought is together;

I too need all the confidence I can get off road. I too am rather taken with TKCs on road and I too feel that MT21s are a good dual sport compromise as any tyres that give me the frites (avez-vous vu ce que j’ai fait là- bas?) on road are straight in room 101.

Your feedback has, therefore, been much appreciated.

I have got MT21s on the X Challenge and was told that if you go easy on them for the first 500 - 600 miles they mature and will last a lot longer than if you give them a hard time from the off. The person who told me this goes to Morocco frequently and he uses them for his trip every time and they last longer than the ride down (yes, he rides all the way there and all the way back) and he gets a good 6000 miles out of a rear, he is on some orange thing or other, 640? 690? something big and powerful anyway. They all look the same to me those orange things!

Mine have done over 5000 miles now and they are about 30% worn. Standard MT21s, no M&S written on them. I would like to think that with my economical riding I can get 10,000 miles out of the rear. I don't like cornering in the wet on anything though, because I am a coward and have no skill.

M+S tyres ,i thought had a lower speed rating than normal tyres.
